For Whom Do Portable Stereos Make Sense?
In no uncertain terms, we tell you that portable stereos only make sense for those who need to play music from CDs and USB devices.
If you can listen to music from your smartphone as you have your songs there, then the purchase of a Bluetooth speaker is more recommended because it is more compact, has potentially better sound and a rechargeable battery.
Among other things, on most smartphones, there is FM radio, so it often doesn’t make sense to buy stereos even if you want to listen to the radio.
Portable stereos, on the other hand, are more cumbersome and have become less common because there are better solutions for those who do not use CDs. But there is also to say that compact stereos have affordable prices and that now devices that can play music CDs are in short supply.
Even from PCs, various companies are removing burners, so portable stereos could come in handy. But if you are not interested in Compact Discs at all (or the old cassettes for the models that support them) and you don’t want to use USB devices to listen to music, then turn to something else.
Supported devices: CD to USB
CDs are practically always supported by portable stereos, they are the reason they exist. Although the widespread use of digital music, albums are still sold as discs in stores.
Compact stereos allow you to play these discs wherever you want. Another type of peripheral supported by portable stereos are USB sticks, thanks to a dedicated USB port.
In the old models, it was not there, but now it has been implemented in most of the specimens because now it is very common to listen to music via USB. If a pen drive is used, the songs inside it must be in the MP3 format.
The CDs are instead in WMA or MP3 format, but for the latter, you have to check if the portable stereo supports MP3. In most models, the USB port has replaced the slot to insert the cassette.
Since the music cassettes have practically disappeared from circulation. However, there are still models that can reproduce them, which could be useful for those who still find them from the 80s and 90s and want to go back to listening to old music.
Audio Quality
Audio quality is one of the most important features in a product used to play music, it is less important if you are interested in other uses (for example listening to sports commentary).
Unfortunately, however, you will not find many details in this particular area in the list of technical specifications of a portable radio.
Am / Fm Tuner
Unlike a Bluetooth speaker, portable radio has always integrated a tuner, which is the device used to hook radio signals.
The radio signal can be transmitted in analog or digital (we will see how later) and can be received by the device in two ways, or we’d better say modulations.
Speakers of the genre have retired best MP3 players, radios and even Hi-Fi systems and all audio systems of the genre with amplifier. But portable stereos are not yet obsolete, because they allow uses that are not possible with wireless mini speakers and other hearing aids.
The first signal adopted by the radios, in chronological terms, was the AM: Amplitude Modulation. In this case, the “information” of the audio signal is impressed by varying the amplitude of the wave: specifically, a high-frequency signal that contains the data is superimposed on a low-frequency signal that serves to change its amplitude.
Connections and Ports
Modern portable radios can have different types of connections, and the choice depends on your needs. Almost all models have a 3.5mm audio port, the widespread audio jack.
Which allows the output to connect a pair of headphones or a speaker system, or a different source input (such as a smartphone). Some models may also have a MicroSD slot to play the songs on the memory card.

To use the radio when out and about, you need to install batteries. Each model can support different types of batteries (for example, LR6 AA batteries are very popular, but each model can support different formats).
They are often included in the original packaging, but sometimes you will have to buy them separately (always check in the sales advertisement if they are present). In my opinion, models that use rechargeable batteries are more convenient.
Other Characteristics
When purchasing your new portable radio, you can also consider several features that I have not yet mentioned: for example, the presence of a display, including a touch-screen.
This allows you to read the information on the radio station hooked up or on the song being played, or even information on the time, date, or listening mode.
Some models may also have shortcuts to instantly connect you to your favorite DAB radio stations or FM radio stations.
You may also be interested in alarm clock support, or even in the clock radio if you like to wake up to the sound of the radio, while some models also have a sleep timer mode, which switches the radio off according to your daily routine or after a certain period of inactivity
Portability
Thanks to the comfortable and wide handle that occupies the upper part, the user can easily lift the portable stereo. Battery operation is a choice that can be perplexing at first.
But which demonstrates the choice of the brand to offer a comfortable and agile object, to take to a party in the park or for an afternoon with friends, without the presence of a plug connector.
The batteries inserted allow you to listen to the CD for up to nine hours of playback, a time that triples for those who prefer to listen to their favorite radio station.
The weight of the object does not reach two kilos without batteries, a convenient value for those who do not like excessively heavy radios. The shape then has an attractive color, with a modern style that appeals to both adults and young people.
