An electric toothbrush is a tool created for cleaning teeth that acts using a rotary, oscillatory movement, but also using pulsations or using more current technologies. This movement is generated by a rechargeable battery motor that is located in the body of the toothbrush itself.

The goal of this device is the deep but gentle removal of food residues, thus preventing the formation of caries. This tool has also proved to be valid in removing plaque and cleaning the space between one tooth and another.

Buying Guide to Select the Best Electric Toothbrushes

Type of Movement

If you have come this far, it means that you have correctly understood that an electric toothbrush is much more effective than a normal one thanks to its automatic movement, which improves the hygiene of the teeth and reduces the formation of plaque.

What you may not know is that not all electric toothbrushes move the same way and that the various types of toothbrushes are distinguished from each other based on the movement of the head.

The oscillating-rotating electric toothbrushes, which often also emit pulsations, have the round head that rotates on itself and around the tooth, effectively acting against plaque and tartar.

The sonic electric toothbrushes, on the other hand, do not have a rotating but vibratory head: the vibrations emitted contribute to cleaning the dental arch thoroughly thanks to the intensity and speed of the movement.

Finally, the ultrasonic electric toothbrushes do not exploit either a rotary movement or the classic vibration but move thanks to very high-frequency micro-vibrations.

Heads, Bluetooth, and Accessories

Among the things to consider when choosing an electric toothbrush, the heads are certainly fundamental: they must be changed every three months, so it is essential to make sure that we are selecting a product whose leaders are always available on the market, perhaps at a not too high cost.

As for the electric toothbrushes from Braun and Philips, almost all the heads are suitable for the various models of an electric toothbrush, and this makes it easier and faster to buy them; these two companies have also created a series of heads that respond to various needs, such as that of whitening the teeth, protecting the gums, or doing a more thorough cleaning.

As we have seen, some top of the range electric toothbrushes use Bluetooth technology to monitor the tooth cleaning operation and give advice to the user.

This is an exciting feature for those who are not sure about brushing their teeth well and love technological innovations. Still, in general, these are features that do not add too much value to a product that, we repeat, is chosen mainly because it cleans the teeth better than “analog” colleagues.

Among the accessories that are worth taking into consideration in the purchase process of the toothbrush, there is undoubtedly the travel case, very useful to always carry your electric toothbrush with you. Still, there are also additional heads, “smart” screens, and special chargers, as in the case of the glass-charger for the top of the range Philips model that we have seen previously.

Supply

If you are thinking of buying an electric toothbrush, also take into account the information on the battery and the type of charging required. Not all electric toothbrushes work with an internal battery: some is also powered by very simple rechargeable or replaceable stylus batteries.

These models, however, are the most basic: only electric toothbrushes with internal battery manage to have a wide range of functions and programs.

Some of these have two different power modes, sometimes even three: think of the models that can also take advantage of a USB port for charging or travel cases with built-in charger.

The Characteristics to Consider

What are the best features to look for on an electric toothbrush? In recent years, the leading companies in the sector have created so many new technologies that it is easy to confuse them: timers, brushes, and pressure let’s be clear.

Two Minute Timer

The America Dental Association recommends using electric toothbrushes for two minutes to clean your teeth carefully and effectively. Brushing the teeth for less than sixty seconds means not removing plaque and bacteria that can hide in the mouth and gum, thus causing various problems.

Experts say having a two-minute timer on a toothbrush helps to clean your teeth. Depending on the model in question, the timer can be different: from the vibration classification every 30 seconds to the display of a timer with an indication of the remaining time.

Quad-Pacer

The Quad-Pacer technology, applied on the best electric toothbrushes, is a division of the timer of two minutes into four vibrations every 30 seconds. Most devices that use Quad-pacer technology produce a series of pulses to alert a user when it’s time to change the arch or part of the mouth.

Pressure Sensor

The most modern toothbrushes are equipped with a pressure sensor that warns the user when you press too much on a tooth or gum. Dr. Gary Glassman, one of the best dentists in the world, he thinks: “Rub with too much violence can irritate the gums, causing pain and bleeding.

The pressure during the act of cleaning is a significant cause of the shrinkage of the gums”. Modern pressure sensors, currently installed on high-end models, emit a hum or pressure that indicates when too much pressure is being applied.

Battery: Duration and Type

The battery of a toothbrush is a feature not to be underestimated. Generally, a rechargeable battery lasts two weeks, on average, more than enough time, even for larger families.

When choosing a toothbrush, you must consider the models with the rechargeable battery, instead of the battery rankings: you save time and above all money.
