Things to Consider Before Buying Best Coffee Grinders
“Coffee is a pleasure, if it isn’t good, what pleasure is it?” With this sentence taken from an old advertisement, you can express how much tasting a quality espresso represents one of the decisive moments of the day.
To further increase the pleasure, you can think of buying a machine to grind coffee beans. Our guide is dedicated to this kind of products, in which we highlight, also through the reviews, the pros, and cons of a coffee grinder.
Two Grinding Techniques
In addition to the price, the first discriminator to be taken into account when choosing the right model is linked to the type of blades used for the shredding of coffee beans. Typically there are two versions: millstones and modules. Let’s see how they differ.
The blade models are equipped with a mechanism reminiscent of that found in ordinary kitchen blenders and comparing prices.
They appear to be the cheapest coffee grinders on the market. This is because the blades ensure a somewhat rough grinding of the beans, more or less subtle, depending on the time during which the rotation is kept active.
If you fall into the category of “purists” of the grinding, then you should turn to the models with millstones, which, in turn, are divided into two further types: with flat or conical millstones.
The latter has a larger surface and therefore, does not need to turn at high speeds to obtain the right amount of coffee with the right degree of finesse.
The models with flat millstones made by the best brands usually require a higher rotation speed to obtain the same result, unless the millstones are unusually large, in which case the operation can take place with the right level of speed.
In Praise of Slowness
Why is it so important that the grinding operation does not take place too quickly, and indeed a certain slowness is to be considered one of the aspects to be placed at the top of the list to obtain a good coffee?
High rotation of the blades or the grinders in contact with the beans generates a certain amount of static electricity and therefore, an overheating of the grinder mechanics and consequences of the coffee.
If the operation takes place slowly, on the other hand, the beans and ground coffee will remain cold, and the quality of the mixture will remain unchanged.
Our advice is, therefore, to opt for a low-speed grinder-doser, to choose from those with reduction gear or direct drive. The quality of the grind is substantially similar, but the former is much noisier.
Doser Yes or No?
The last feature to consider is whether to choose an appliance with a dispenser or without, or that it has a container, also called a bell, in which the coffee is collected once ground.
In this guide, we have always referred to this type of device, not for nothing called grinder-doses, but it is also possible to purchase one that is free of it.
What are the differences? Opting for a model that has a dispenser allows you to act on an ad hoc fin to obtain the right dose of coffee to be placed in the machine or in the coffee maker to prepare the espresso.
In the case of a model that does not have one, called direct delivery, you will need a few attempts before figuring out how many grains to grind to get the right amount of powder.
Vintage Design
This Peugeot is a grinder! Well … if we were talking about a car we would have to worry, but fortunately, it is not: it is a real coffee grinder; on the contrary, to be honest.
You can grind much more like salt, pepper, etc. Where do we want to start? Indeed, from the design that, in our opinion, is what strikes at first glance.
If you like vintage objects, you will fall in love with it, and you could also buy it to keep it as a decorative object, a pretty and expensive piece of furniture. Oh yes, in our opinion it costs a lot, nothing prohibitive, it is clear, but far from being classified as a commercial product.
Uncomfortable to Use
The things of the past were not always appreciated for comfort, and it seems that the manufacturer cared more than necessary to put on the market a grinder that, in all respects, could take you back in time.
The use of this coffee grinder is uncomfortable whatever position you choose to use it. In particular, it is difficult to hold it firmly.
Since we are in the mood for criticism, the collecting drawer is not very spacious, and therefore you will have to empty it often during the grinding operations; by the way, you have several levels to find the coffee powder that best suits your needs. Of course, you will have to experiment a little before finding the right one, but then you will go ahead quickly.
Excellent Materials
Those who bought the coffee grinder pointed out that it is made with excellent materials. The construction quality of the object is never questioned, as can be seen from the many comments published on the net.
This justifies at least in part the high price of the item. In short, we must appreciate and highlight the great attention paid by the manufacturer, who has shown to have insignificant consideration even the smallest of details.
It is probably not an object for many, considering that it is a manual and vintage model. Still, it will certainly not fail to conquer a good number of passionate coffee drinkers.
