Baby Nasal Aspirators Buyer Guide
When you need to include a new baby item in your baby’s care routine, it is normal for many questions to arise. Now that you understand the main features of nasal aspirators, let’s go into some important aspects with our answers to the most frequently asked questions about this much-debated product.
What Is a Nasal Aspirator and What Is It For?
Let’s start from the beginning. Nasal vacuum cleaners for children are objects designed to remove mucus from the nasal cavities of the little ones when they are not yet able to blow their noses.
The characteristics of this product make it ideal for children and the removal of mucus is quick and painless for them. That’s why many parents have decided to help themselves with these types of vacuums when their babies have a cold.
How Many Types of Nasal Aspirator for Children Are There?
As you have already seen, the world of childcare is advancing by leaps and bounds, constantly making new models and products appear. In the case of nasal aspirators for babies and children, we can find multiple types, from the most traditional to the most innovative:
- Nasal Bulb Aspirator: the most classic model of all. It is a manual vacuum cleaner that sucks the baby’s mucus for absorption, that is, when the bulb is pressed and released, it is sucked out of the mucus. The risk is to push the mucus even deeper if the bulb is pressed again at the wrong time.
- Nasal Mouth Aspirator: this model is also quite traditional and the mucus is aspirated “by mouth”, ie it is the parent who sucks through a straw. Obviously it must be a device designed to prevent the mucus from rising towards the mouth of the aspirator.
- Electric Nasal Aspirator: has a more modern design and operation. These vacuum cleaners have different suction capacities, which are very useful depending on the amount of mucus that the baby has.
- Nasal Aspirator for Vacuum Cleaner: as you have seen in our product selection, there are nasal aspirators that can be connected to the vacuum cleaner. You can also find a video below explaining how to use them.
- Nasal Forceps: they are not a real nasal aspirator, but they perform the same function. They are very useful especially for removing the superficial mucus that penetrates the baby’s nose.
What’s the best? It depends. While more traditional models are cheaper, but a little more difficult to use, electric nasal aspirators work automatically, which simplifies the task. Of course, they are more expensive.
How Do You Use a Nasal Aspirator for Babies?
When children are a little older, even if they are not yet able to blow their nose, the process of aspirating the mucus is simplified because they can collaborate a minimum.ย With a newborn baby, things can be difficult if the nasal aspirator is not used properly. Here are some rough guidelines to assist you in this process.
- First, you need to keep the baby calm. What happens next will not be entirely pleasant for him and it is best that he be as calm as possible. Use the sound of your voice.
- The position of the child is fundamental. Place it on a flat surface, in front of you, with your head and legs slightly raised.
- Prepare the extractor fan (depending on the type).
- Operate it with a steady hand in one nostril, continuing to speak in a calm voice to make the child understand that you are there to help him.
- Repeat if necessary in the other nostril.
- Once the mucus has been aspirated, continue pampering the baby for a couple of minutes. Then wash the vacuum cleaner and leave it ready for later use.
Of course, these are general guidelines, and you should always read the manufacturer’s instructors first and follow them step by step. If you have doubts you can always ask your pediatrician.
When Should You Use the Nasal Aspirator?
Although it is a very effective item for cleaning the baby’s nose, it is important to know that it should only be used when the baby has a lot of mucus, never as a daily or routine nasal cleansing technique. In fact, if your child has mucus, but breathes normally, you shouldn’t resort to this device either.
In case you need to use it, you shouldn’t exceed three or four uses per day. Also, when children have a cold, it is best to use the nasal aspirator before eating. In this way, the “little one” will have a free nose and will breathe normally while eating. It is also advisable before putting it to sleep.
Do Pediatricians Recommend Using the Nasal Aspirator?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions about nasal aspirators for children. In recent times, there has been much controversy over this article.
In most cases, the reason why pediatricians do not recommend these products is the improper use that parents make of them. If they are used incorrectly, they can for example cause otitis, since the mucus can end up in the Eustachian tubes.
In addition, they can be annoying for children (even if they feel better afterward) and often parents keep using vacuum cleaners more than necessary, even for a simple cold. However, with due attention, specialists still recommend the use, since they can clear the airways and improve the breathing of the young.
Some experts believe that the aspirator can irritate the nasal mucosa, which is why it should not be used too often. Furthermore, someone else claims that it is not really effective in removing the deepest secretions, but only the mucus of the front of the nose.
How Do You Clean a Nasal Aspirator?
Proper maintenance of all baby items is essential to ensuring our baby’s health. In this case, with nasal aspirators, cleaning becomes even more important, since the mucus with which it comes into contact can be a huge source of harmful bacteria for the baby.
It is essential, after each use, to thoroughly clean the nasal aspirator. This way it is ready for later use. Disassemble each of the pieces and wash them with warm water and neutral soap (those that can be taken apart, of course).
Leave to air dry and, if you want, you can sterilize them (check that it is possible to do it with the product in your possession) before reassembling the device.
Purchase Criteria
Surely, after reading all the information about the baby’s nasal aspirators, you are convinced of how useful it can be to have one at home. Before making the final choice, however, we leave you the last tips to keep in mind to buy the product that best suits your needs. Follow these criteria carefully:
- Materials
- Retention
- Dimension
Materials
Of course, as always when an object will be used by our child or come into contact with his skin, we must pay close attention to the production materials. These should be qualified and prepared for use with young children, i.e. they should not be toxic to them.
In the case of nasal aspirators, the most recommended materials, in particular for the part that gets into the baby’s nose, are silicone or PP (polypropylene), very resistant and hypoallergenic. The quality of these materials will also affect the durability of a product that you will use quite often in certain periods.
Retention
Thirdly, we must also think about the future maintenance of the nasal aspirator or its cleaning. In this sense, there are two fundamental bases. On the one hand, that the materials are of quality. The higher the quality of plastic and silicones, the better the tolerance to sterilization, to ensure total cleanliness.
On the other hand, it is important to think about the cleaning ability. With this, we refer to the ease with which it is possible to disassemble the device to thoroughly clean each of the pieces. The more it can be dismantled, the better you can reach every corner to remove dirt.
Dimension
Finally, let’s talk about size. Although it may seem silly, the size of the nasal aspirator is very important for two main reasons. First of all, the child will not like you to use it, so finding a small and ergonomic one will simplify its use with one hand (if you have to hold the little one with the other). In addition, it is useful that this device is not too large to be able to carry it with you at all times.
