Buyer Guide to Choose Bicycle Mirrors

Type of Mirrors for The Bike

A guide on how to choose the bike mirror should not start from a list of the various types. The first step is to identify the model that you think maybe best suited to your tastes or needs.

There are different types of mirrors on the market; the main difference that distinguishes them is the mounting system on the bicycle.

Handlebar Mirror

The first type of mirror is also the most classic. That is what can be mounted on the handlebar. They are the most common and closely resemble the mirrors used in motorcycles.

These are easy to use and high-quality accessories. They also have the advantage of providing you with an excellent viewing angle. Compared to the other models, they are also the largest, which means that you can count on a vast field of view. Another typical feature of these accessories is to wear resistance.

However, rearview mirrors for bikes have a disadvantage; they are often uncomfortable to assemble, except models that use Velcro attachments. Because of this, it is not convenient for you to buy them if you intend to transfer them from one Bike to another continuously.

It must also be said that they increase the width of the Bike and that thieves often tend to steal them from parked bicycles. Being challenging to assemble and disassemble, it is easy to think that you will leave them exposed to the sights of passersby. Finally, to use them, you will be forced to move your gaze from the road in front of you to the side.

Helmet Mirror

Another solution to be evaluated is the helmet mirrors. They are probably the most popular among cyclists, whether they are experts or beginners. As the name suggests, these mirrors are installed on the top of the helmet. This is possible thanks to an articulated tube that brings the mirror before your eyes.

These are accessories that have many advantages. To start, they are straightforward to assemble, using a clamp or a velcro strap. If you want, you can also use glue. Also, most models are suitable for all types of headgear.

The main advantage, however, is adaptability to the visual field. This is because they allow you to see what’s going on behind you without turning your head. Among other advantages, helmet mirrors do not have to adapt to the structure of the bicycle.

By the way, they are easy to remove when you are not going to use them. Often the rod is equipped with a release mechanism from the base mounted on the helmet. Therefore they are efficient.

Of course, they also have flaws. Specifically, the jointed rod tends to wear out fairly quickly. When it happens, the stability of the mirror is compromised and therefore becomes more of a nuisance than support. If you choose these models, always avoid those with adhesive, by far the worst in terms of sealing.

Mirror for Glasses

On the market, you will also find bicycle mirrors to be mounted on the glasses. They work similarly to helmet mirrors and are also similar in structure. The main difference is represented by the hooking system. Individually, these accessories are mounted on cycling glasses through a sort of three-tooth comb.

As in the previous case, you find a long rod that has the task of positioning the mirror in front of the eyes. You can use it to adjust the angle of the accessory to the desired position.

Compared to the mirror for the helmet, they occupy an uncomfortable and even unnatural position. They usually tend to strain the neck when used.

They are also tiny, which is another problem. However, they are straightforward to assemble and can often be used with any type of glasses.

Wrist Mirror

The latest type is the wrist mirror—a genuinely alternative model, which can be worn as you would wear a ubiquitous watch. The fastening system on the wrist, or the strap, is often made of velcro. The mirror is instead obtained by lifting it from its housing.

Initially, this system can cause quite a few difficulties, just get used to it, finding the best angle and position for you with practice. The most exciting thing is that you won’t need anything to install them, apart from your wrist.

Which makes them much more practical than all the other models. Finally, wrist mirrors do not have specific disadvantages, and they only require practice.

How to Choose Bike Mirrors?

Material

The material is an essential aspect if you want to choose a bike mirror that is robust and reliable. Keep in mind that the mirror will undergo several vibrations and that a delicate model could break or loosen in a short time.

Most of these accessories are made of plastic. The best mirrors, therefore the most expensive, are instead made of carbon fiber or other resistant materials. If you intend to buy a handlebar mirror, we recommend that you immediately focus on carbon fiber.

Steel, on the other hand, proves to be an excellent material for helmet or spectacle mirrors. The discussion on materials does not end here, even what is essential about the mirror. Some manufacturers offer mirrors made of plastic or high-quality resins.

However, these materials quickly tend to scratch or become opaque with time. That’s why it is always recommended to buy a bike mirror made of glass. It is undoubtedly the best material because it maintains its reflective properties longer.

Shape

The shape of the mirror is another aspect that you should always consider. Specifically, on the market, you can find models with an oval, round or rectangular shape. Finished models are the most common but offer a smaller field of view. On the other hand, they are also lighter due to their small size.

Oval mirrors are more common in the field of handlebar or helmet accessories. They are larger than round ones, and by reflection, they offer a larger field of view. Also, they are shaped in such a way that you can see the road from multiple angles.

Finally, it closes with rectangular mirrors. They are very rare nowadays, although they are the ones that offer the most excellent field of vision. They are also fascinating because they have a classic flavor.

Usage Preferences

When choosing a bike mirror, you also need to weigh your preferences. Especially the general use you make of the Bike. We have already seen that those for the handlebar are not suitable for those who leave the Bike unattended in public places. On the other hand, they are best if you park your bicycle in safe areas.

Those for the helmet and glasses are easy to assemble and disassemble. They can also be used regardless of the bike model you ride. However, they force you to wear a helmet or glasses, which may make you feel uncomfortable.

Mirror Type

Before concluding our guide on how to choose the bike mirror, there is another topic to discuss. In this case, we talk about the type of mirror, since there are two types.

On one side, we have convex lenses. On the other hand, flat lenses. In our opinion, the flat ones are the best, because they do not distort the images related to what is behind you. This allows you to have a clear and reliable perspective of the real distances.

Adjustability

It is unlikely that you will always be in the same position, so it is essential to give yourself the ability to adjust your mirror as needed. In particular, the mirrors mounted on the handlebar are subject to vibrations, so if this is your favorite style, you must have the ability to keep it concentrated and in position.

Otherwise, if you are looking for something a little more permanent like IRBM, you will have to make sure that the position and angle are perfect from the start.
