Over 80% of motorcyclists injured in a motorcycle accident have leg injuries, including 16% in the feet and 23% in the ankles. The feet are the part of the body that is most likely to come into contact with the road, causing injury even at a slow speed and during a light accident.

Injuries occur from direct or trapped impacts between the motorcycle and other vehicles and objects, as well as against the abrasive road surface.

Buyer Guide to Choose the Best Motorcycle Boots

Shape and Fit

Boots must be comfortable. They should not be too tight or too loose. If they are too tight, your feet can numb particularly if you are in a cold climate. Check if it is possible to mount, drive, and use all the controls freely. Are you able to walk normally, climb stairs, bend over, sit down and collect the keys from the floor?

In order to ensure protection, the boots should be at least 16 centimeters high from the inner sole (or at least a few centimeters above the ankle) and provide protection against impacts for the legs, feet, and ankles.

How Are They Closed?

If you just have to pull a zip, you may be subjected to a kick during an accident, just in the moment of real need. Check for velcro, on a large surface or loop hooks.

They should have soles resistant to slippery surfaces and be waterproof enough to allow you to travel at least 1 hour in the pouring rain. The leather must be marked as compliant with ISO 11642, which is proof of color tightness in the water. Or in plastic material.

Avoid boots that allow the foot to cross the edge of the sole. Look for at least a distance of 10 mm from the edge. Opt for abrasion-resistant materials. The skin should be at least 2.5mm thick. Also, look for the thickness of the soles – at least 4 mm, heels not included.

Everything You Need to Know About Motorcycle Boots

On motorcycles, it is essential to always wear appropriate footwear. The protection of the feet is very often neglected: it is normal to meet motorcyclists and scooters / and in sneakers or worse flip flops or heeled shoes.

Feet at Risk

It is estimated that in 16% of motorcycle accidents there is an injury, even serious, to the feet and in 23% to the ankles. Important percentages. There is no need to remember how obnoxious and disabling these injuries can be.

According to well-known research of almost thirty years ago (Hurt, 1981), wearing specific boots is 50% less likely to find foot injuries. We can say with good approximation that with the progress of materials, research, and specific standards (approvals) that have taken place in recent years, this percentage can only grow.

The Boot and Its Approval

Motorcycle boots, therefore, must be rigid, difficult to penetrate by any blunt instruments, they must resist the abrasion of even a long slip, they must protect the sensitive joints of the ankle and the toes, they must cover and defend the tibia.

And they must be, which should not be underestimated, comfortable and ergonomic . All features that we find in the EN 13634 standard (as mentioned above) which establish how professional motorcycle boots must be made and what tests they must pass (but in our opinion this distinction between professional and non-professional motorcyclists is specious: we all have to demand products that exceed stringent tests!

Fortunately, this legislation (unlike the one on suits and the one on gloves) has been well received by shoe manufacturers, and many approved models are currently available: it is possible to satisfy almost all types of feet and all needs.

It is necessary to mention the XPD (Spidi footwear division) which has approved different track and sport-touring models according to EN 13634. Scott also produces a level 2 homologated cross boots. Level 2 are probably others, but for some curious reason, the producers avoid advertising it.

A large part of the market, however, is made up of level 1 approved boots (and infinite non-approved ones, which we will have the goodness to ignore). The substantial difference between the two levels is given by the abrasion resistance ( 5 seconds against 12 ).

The gap is high, so if we are buying a level 1 it would be good to check the abrasion seconds stated in the test report in the information booklet. However, this information is not always present in the box and this is a point that should be seriously improved by the manufacturers.

We always recommend opting for the greatest possible security. In any case, an approved level 1 boot is still better than any NOT approved boot; as we always say, perhaps the non-approved is equally good, but who guarantees it?

Why a Technical Boot? I Want to Choose the Motorcycle Shoe!

Remaining on the thousand proposals that the market offers, the “technical” motorcycle shoes are very successful (especially in summer). These can not be approved according to classic standards (the standard establishes a minimum height of 16 centimeters from the insole to the upper part of the shoe in addition to the rigidity of the sole and toe cap.

Which these shoes hardly present), and offer limited protection at the lower ends. Although they can be practical in some situations, we tend to advise against this type of footwear for continuous use.

If you can’t do without it, during the purchase phase, carefully evaluate the materials and the construction care (in the absence of homologation, the real leather is better), the rigidity of the sole and toe, the protection of the ankle.

If we reject its use on a motorcycle (a shoe can be technical as little as possible, for example, if the foot gets stuck between the motorcycle and the asphalt), we can say that the technical shoe can be acceptable in occasional use and be a good compromise “better than nothing ”in urban use.

For a girl, for example, slipping on a motorbike (but a loss of balance in maneuver is also enough) wearing an open shoe (sorry to repeat it, but something that seems so obvious to us, in reality, is not obvious) means, at best, not being able to more to wear an elegant shoe for weeks, months or worse forever.

In conclusion, today as today there are different models of boots approved to EN 13634, many of level 1, some of level 2. Since the possibility presents itself, it seems obligatory to buy only approved boots. And above all, always wear them.
