Buyer Guide to Choose the Best Motorcycle Boots
Shape and Fit
Boots must be comfortable. They should not be too tight or too loose. If they are too tight, your feet can numb particularly if you are in a cold climate. Check if it is possible to mount, drive, and use all the controls freely. Are you able to walk normally, climb stairs, bend over, sit down and collect the keys from the floor?
In order to ensure protection, the boots should be at least 16 centimeters high from the inner sole (or at least a few centimeters above the ankle) and provide protection against impacts for the legs, feet, and ankles.
How Are They Closed?
If you just have to pull a zip, you may be subjected to a kick during an accident, just in the moment of real need. Check for velcro, on a large surface or loop hooks.
They should have soles resistant to slippery surfaces and be waterproof enough to allow you to travel at least 1 hour in the pouring rain. The leather must be marked as compliant with ISO 11642, which is proof of color tightness in the water. Or in plastic material.
Avoid boots that allow the foot to cross the edge of the sole. Look for at least a distance of 10 mm from the edge. Opt for abrasion-resistant materials. The skin should be at least 2.5mm thick. Also, look for the thickness of the soles – at least 4 mm, heels not included.

Fortunately, this legislation (unlike the one on suits and the one on gloves) has been well received by shoe manufacturers, and many approved models are currently available: it is possible to satisfy almost all types of feet and all needs.
It is necessary to mention the XPD (Spidi footwear division) which has approved different track and sport-touring models according to EN 13634. Scott also produces a level 2 homologated cross boots. Level 2 are probably others, but for some curious reason, the producers avoid advertising it.
A large part of the market, however, is made up of level 1 approved boots (and infinite non-approved ones, which we will have the goodness to ignore). The substantial difference between the two levels is given by the abrasion resistance ( 5 seconds against 12 ).
The gap is high, so if we are buying a level 1 it would be good to check the abrasion seconds stated in the test report in the information booklet. However, this information is not always present in the box and this is a point that should be seriously improved by the manufacturers.
We always recommend opting for the greatest possible security. In any case, an approved level 1 boot is still better than any NOT approved boot; as we always say, perhaps the non-approved is equally good, but who guarantees it?
Why a Technical Boot? I Want to Choose the Motorcycle Shoe!
Remaining on the thousand proposals that the market offers, the “technical” motorcycle shoes are very successful (especially in summer).
