The otoscope is an instrument that not only doctors but also parents can use to do an examination of the ear canal. You don’t necessarily need to be a family doctor or an otolaryngologist to decide to buy an otoscope. The onset of chronic diseases or the need to check the health of one’s ears is two equally valid reasons.

Before helping you choose the one that’s right for you, let’s see how a common otoscope is made. It is divided into a head and a body that can be easily gripped with one hand. The structure can be in plastic or metallic material or combine the two elements. In the first case, it will have a lower price, while in the second, you will spend more to have a longer duration.

From the review made by many buyers who have bought it for domestic use, it is easy to use it even when you have no medical skills. In fact, if your child cries when you touch his ear, you can check his health by inserting the appropriate speculum in the ear canal.

If you are a specialist in otorhinolaryngology, you may need a slightly more complex instrument to practice to become a good doctor in your field. In our ranking, you will also find the best Otoscope models equipped with pneumatic technology that is used to measure the internal pressure of the ear.

How to Choose the Otoscope that Suits You?

You don’t necessarily need to be a family doctor or an otolaryngologist to decide to buy an otoscope. The onset of chronic diseases or the need to check the health of one’s ears is two equally valid reasons.

As a rule, hearing problems are associated only and only with the health condition of the elderly who, over the years, tend to become deaf. For this reason, unfortunately, sometimes there is a tendency to underestimate a whole series of symptoms and annoyances in the adolescent or adult phase, with the erroneous belief that it is early to suffer from auditory disorders.

It should also be added that in some situations, the symptomatology is quite complex: nausea, dizziness, pain in the head, and eyes are just some of the collateral discomforts that can be associated with ear problems, even in children.

For this reason, an otoscopic examination is always recommended: minimally invasive, rapid, and at the same time, very accurate, it allows you to identify the problem rather quickly and come up with a solution. Often, in fact, an outpatient analysis like this is enough to recognize the cause of malaise, which is generally identified by the observation of some external parts of the ear:

  • External auricle
  • Auditory canal
  • Timpano
  • Tympanic membrane

The key to face this examination is the otoscope, whose name already explains its purpose and what it is used for: the literal translation of this word of Greek origin means, in fact, “instrument for observing the ear.”

It is a medical device that allows clear visualization of the inside of the ear canal in all its length. It is an accessory with a truly elementary function, able to accurately identify the emergence of the main hearing problems.

Models and Features

Although it is a very simple tool and, all in all, with rather standardized features, there are different types of otoscopy accessories on the market. This depends on the specific usage modes for which it is intended:

  • Battery operated otoscope
  • Binocular microscope
  • Pneumatic otoscope
  • Pediatric otoscope
  • Veterinary otoscope

It is very easy to find it in general practitioners ‘surgeries, as well as in specialist doctors’ offices; depending on the needs, professionals can decide whether to buy the common portable battery models or the versions with a power supply that requires, very often, the wall installation.

These are important medical devices for monitoring ear conditions. Regardless of their shape and specific functioning, they allow to analyze the color and the overall appearance of the ear canal, as well as the brightness and translucency of the tympanic membrane. From the study of these superficial characteristics, it will already be possible to understand the causes of the basic symptoms.

The most widespread solution is undoubtedly the battery one, due to its extreme versatility and ease of use. The structure has a rather simple shape, consisting of a base cylinder to hold and a head, which is inserted into the patient’s ear. These two sections can be joined together by a screw or bayonet connection, depending on the model.

There are three essential elements that characterize a professional otoscope: a light source, an ear cone, and a magnifying glass. The final purpose of the accessory is to allow the otolaryngologist, as well as the general practitioner, to enjoy excellent visibility inside the ear canal; therefore, lighting is certainly the most important aspect. It must be strong and widespread enough to provide visibility along the entire duct, without however creating reflections and flashes, nor altering the natural chromatisms of the ear.

LED Light

Although all technologies are able to offer great advantages and a good fidelity of contrasts and colors, LED lighting is still the best solution. In fact, it combines an intense and homogeneous luminosity with reduced energy consumption, while the other typologies struggle to exactly respect the colors.

Magnification Capacity of The Otoscope?

The head also houses a magnifying glass, which normally has a capacity of 3 x (8 diopters), more than enough power for the needs of general practitioners and outpatient visits. The lenses are always in scratch-resistant optical glass, a guarantee of long life.
If you make habitual use of the otoscope when you have to buy a new one, stick to the enlargement you are used to. Keep in mind that a higher magnification provides more detail and usually a wider field of view.

Head of An Otoscope

The light is channeled into a conical termination called distal, usually made of stainless steel. This is the portion to be inserted into the ear canal; for hygiene and safety reasons, it must always be covered by suitable disposable conical rubbers. In most sets on sale, the otoscope is always placed on the market combined with a variable number of disposable cones. Alternatively, the distal is reusable and must be disinfected at the end of each visit.

Handle of Otoscope

Finally, the handle is usually made of hard plastic in most cases; high-level devices can, however, also be made of metal to greatly facilitate cleaning and disinfection. In this section, it is also possible to insert the batteries that allow the general operation of the device.

How to Use an Otoscope

Although it is very easy to use a tool, it requires some manual skill and some little care to avoid damaging the ears. Especially when it comes to patients at an early age, it becomes even more fundamental to know how to operate, in order to be able to act at its best.

Otoscope for Children

Precisely because the little ones tend to be restless and move continuously, there are on the market models of an otoscope for children colored and with nice shapes, to help the doctor at the time of the visit. The headset should only be inserted after the auditory canal has been aligned.

Understanding how best to use an otoscope is, in any case, the primary step for a perfect assessment of the patient’s state of health. The important maneuver to be done before inserting it into the ear canal is, in fact, the correct straightening of the latter, by its nature curved downwards and forwards. Assuming to be right-handed and, therefore, to hold the otoscope with the right hand, the maneuver will be performed with the left; otherwise, you will need to reverse your hands.

Steps to Use Otoscope

The first step is to insert the left middle finger (if necessary, together with another finger) in the lower section of the cavity that marks the hollow of the auricle. With the finger in this position, it will be necessary to pull the ear backward and upwards for adults, downwards for newborns.

This movement will straighten the entire length of the ear canal: at this point, it will be possible to insert the distal with extreme delicacy, taking care that the patient does not move. Finally, it is good to remember that the person who carries out the check must sit in front of the individual under examination, making the head rotate 90 degrees in the opposite direction to that of the ear in question.

Care must be taken to carry out all operations with some care, moving with extreme lightness. There is a very effective way to use the otoscope without risking damaging the patient’s ear. In fact, all you need to do is keep a hand on the person’s head for the duration of the visit to ensure maximum stability and minimize the risk of injury.

Additional Accessories

Since otolaryngology is the medicine that deals with the well-being of the ears, nose, and throat, sometimes the otoscope is accompanied by a series of additional components in the form of an all-inclusive kit. The latter has the purpose of helping the professional doctor to make the most of it so that it can be useful for diagnosing accurately any dysfunctions in the whole head-neck area.

The set normally includes one or more mirrors for checking the larynx, the nasal speculum, and the light for analyzing the throat. These accessories can be autonomous, or they can be mounted on the base of the otoscope itself. In addition, the classic wooden spatula to lower the tongue is also often available in the disposable version. With these additional items, the otolaryngologist will be able to perform all the basic checks for the nose, throat, and ears, three areas of the body where the symptoms are often quite correlated.

Soft Ear Specula

For traditional specimens, which only require analysis of the ear canal, eardrum, and tympanic membrane, it is certainly essential to provide for the purchase of additional packages of soft ear specula. They, together with the distal, are available in a disposable or reusable format, and there are different sizes to better adapt to each type of ear. Common sizes of ear cones are 2.5mm, 4mm, 5mm.

Some models also provide the possibility to integrate perfectly with a single-ball insufflator, an air pump to perform pneumatic tests of the eardrum. This eliminates the need to purchase an additional otopneumoscope.

The last classic accessory for those who choose to buy an otoscope is a practical case made of fabric, leather, or synthetic material in which to store medical equipment. It is a simple but effective article to increase the level of cleanliness and protection of your diagnostic equipment.

Cleaning and Advice

When it comes to products that have to do with people’s health, hygiene is one of the fundamental aspects not to be forgotten before, during, and after use. That is why it is essential to ensure that the otoscope is always free of debris and dirt. To do this, simply wipe the head and body with a soft cloth soaked in disinfectant at the beginning and at the end of each medical examination. Immersion in liquid substances must be strictly avoided!

If reusable ear specula are used, they can be disinfected with an autoclave or boiling water, taking care not to exceed 121 ° C, or using special cold sanitation products.

Before the visit, it is always suggested to check that the magnifying glass is clean: any stains and streaks could, in fact, compromise the diagnosis. In the case of dirt, simply remove it following the instructions in the user manual and proceed with cleaning. When the activity is complete, simply reinsert the lens into its section of the otoscope.

Finally, we recommend that you always have a set of spare bulbs and batteries available: in fact, if an intermittent light should be found, the cause must be immediately verified. Normally the problem is solved by replacing the bulb or batteries; if, however, the malfunction continues, it is recommended to discontinue use and contact the manufacturer.
