Best Peo Cameras Buyer Guide

What Is a Poe Camera

A PoE (Power over Ethernet) IP camera is powered directly via the network cable and therefore does not require connection to the electricity network.

A feature, therefore very useful when you do not want or are unable to power a device locally. For example, to reach the peripheral corners of the garden or terraces.

5 Decisive Factors for Choosing the Poe Camera

1. Typology

The first factor to consider when considering the purchase of a surveillance camera concerns its type: depending on the use you intend to make of the digital cameras, and in particular where you intend to install it, you will have to orient yourself on one type or another.

The surveillance cameras are divided into two categories, those suitable for being installed outdoors and those designed to work within the home.

Between the two types, there are important differences from the point of view, first of all, obviously, of resistance to water and bad weather, then of the installation methods and the type and quantity of cables needed for connection. Let’s see what these differences consist of in detail.

Isolation

The main difference between the two types of concerns resistance to bad weather, even heavy ones, and operation even in extreme temperatures. For an outdoor camera, it is essential to be able to withstand even heavy rain, hail, and snow deposition. An outdoor surveillance camera must also be able to operate even at temperatures below zero and above 40 ° C.

The same requirements are not as important for an indoor video camera, which is already protected from the elements and extreme temperatures by the home environment. These models are rarely waterproof and have a more limited operating temperature range.

From this point of view, therefore, if it is theoretically possible to install an outdoor camera in the house, it is not recommended to install an unstructured one outside the house to resist atmospheric agents and extreme temperatures.

Installation

Secondly, it is necessary to consider where and how the camera can be installed: the two types of cameras also differ from this point of view.

Outdoor fixtures are normally equipped with a bracket that allows them to be fixed to the wall using screws and plugs, and no other way of fixing the fixture to other surfaces is foreseen. Indoor

Cameras, on the other hand, can simply be placed on a flat surface, and they do not always have supports for wall or ceiling fixing. Especially if you opt for the purchase of an indoor spy camera, therefore, it is good that you check the type of supports it has to be sure you can install it exactly where you need it.

Cables

For convenience and safety reasons, you will also want to consider which and how many cables will come out of the camera. It must be said that modern technology has almost eliminated the need to pull video cables.

Almost all surveillance cameras transmit data through a WiFi connection, wirelessly, to the home router or a control unit, in case a system has been installed fully.

The power supply guarantees continuity surveillance, while the batteries may leave a moment of non-coverage between discharging and replacement.

2. Connectivity

The second factor to consider when choosing a surveillance camera is that relating to the remote functions that are made available by the connection, whether this WiFi or cable.

Unlike the cameras of the previous generation, the current ones rely on the internet for several fundamental functions previously entrusted, in their less advanced version, to video recorders and control units, such as saving the recorded videos remotely and managing the camera through a dedicated web portal or mobile application.

Among the features made possible by internet connection, the most common are:

  • Saving Movies: very often, surveillance cameras offer the possibility to save the footage taken on a cloud service, that is to say on a dedicated space on a remote server, also, or as an alternative to saving locally, on a computer or a card Micro SD
  • Accessibility: many manufacturers offer a dedicated online portal through which to access their saved videos and/or directly to the camera from any location and device, with the possibility of viewing the footage in real-time and controlling the movements of the camera (if provided )
  • Smart Applications: in many cases, it is possible to perform the same operations, rather than from the web portal, through a free application for mobile devices
  • Remote Control: very often, from the portal and/or from the app, it is also possible to manage and program the camera activity, planning the start of filming at specific times and choosing if and when to receive notifications, as we will see better shortly

3. Operation

The third factor that we have identified as decisive in the choice of the surveillance camera is that relating to its operation, which concerns two distinct aspects: on the one hand. T

The quantity and amplitude of movements that the video camera can carry out, on which the surface dimensions depend controllable, on the other hand, the possibility offered to the user to manage the ‘ activation of the camera.

Field of View

The movements that the surveillance camera is capable of or not determine which visual coverage it can offer. The simplest models are fixed, without the possibility of making panoramas, nor of raising or lowering the point of view

The more advanced video camera models, however, allow you to range over a larger portion of the field thanks to the motorized movement on the two axes.

Zoom

The zoom capabilities of surveillance cameras are generally quite limited, and magnifications are rarely obtained using the optical group, and much more often by the digital intervention.

The optical focus is qualitatively superior to the digital one, which leads to a loss of sharpness of the image that the optical focus does not suffer.

Indicatively, the best models can reach 8x magnifications, while the cheapest ones are completely devoid of them and rely on a fixed focus with a good depth of field.

Activation

The user of the surveillance camera is entrusted with a certain level of Control over how and when it should shoot. Almost all the cameras on the market provide at least the automatic activation of the filming whenever movement is detected within the frame.

While the more advanced models also provide other options, such as activating the filming at scheduled times of the day or continuous shooting manually activated from the control panel.

4. Alarms

The type of alarms and indications that can be received from a surveillance camera varies greatly depending on the model chosen, and it is essential to consider this aspect when considering purchasing it.

In fact, among the most interesting potential of surveillance cameras, there is the possibility to monitor in real-time the events filmed by the video camera.

This occurs not only, as we have already seen, with remote access to the camera, but also through a range of warnings that can be received in real-time.
Let’s see what the main types of alerts that a surveillance camera can send are.

Email Alert

A service offered by practically all models, even the cheapest ones, is the sending of email notifications every time the camera records a suspicious movement.

As we have seen, activation via a motion sensor is a common feature of all modern cameras. The email sent typically contains the date and time of the detection and three or more frames taken by the video camera. Some models may also include sending a short movie clip.

Push notifications

In some cases, for those models that provide integration with a specific mobile application, it is possible to receive the same type of alert through the app instead of the email, by sending a push notification similar to those that are received, for example, when an email or text message is received.

5. Shooting Quality

Finally, the last factor that we suggest you consider, which in our opinion deserves attention, is the quality of the shots that a surveillance camera can offer.

Several factors are affecting the quality of the image, ranging from the resolution of the shooting, color management, viewing angle, and more.

Let’s see each point in more detail :

  • Resolution: All models offer a range of resolutions to choose from. The best ones come up to a Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 p), while among the mid-range models, a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 p is very common. Lower-end cameras stop at VGA resolution (640 x 480 p)
  • Brightness: the best models, especially those for outdoors, automatically balance the exposure based on the brightness of the environment, so that the images are always clear and legible. In many cases there is also a filter called IR-Cut that blocks infrared radiation during the day, to ensure that the color rendering of the image is true
  • Viewing Angle: the width of the viewing angle depends on the camera lens, and can range from approximately 45 ° to 75 ° in the models indicated as “wide-angle.” This data expresses the portion of the visual field framed by the camera and not, as we have seen above, the overall portion that the camera can cover by performing a panoramic
  • Infrared: most models on the market are equipped with infrared LEDs that allow viewing and recording even in the total absence of light, up to a maximum distance of 40 m in the most advanced models
