Rowenta Iron Buying Guide

Have you found the iron you need? Maybe still not, and perhaps you still have doubts about being clarified before making the final choice. In the following section, we have prepared a series of answers to the most frequently asked questions about this useful appliance.

How Many Types of Iron Are There?

One of the first aspects you should analyze is the types of iron you can find on the market. It will help you to clarify the various options you have available. These are these five:

  • Horizontal Iron. It is a traditional and best-selling model. It offers efficient and straightforward ironing, even if it depends on its power.
  • Vertical Iron. You will find a straightforward and more professional model. The former is used to iron clothes or curtains in the home, or are used as travel irons. The latter is also used in homes, but especially in shops.
  • Travel Iron. Usually, it is smaller than normal horizontal iron, although, as we have seen, it can also be vertical. Its power is generally less than other models, but it is lighter and easier to handle.
  • Iron with Boiler. It has a large water tank that allows you to iron large quantities of clothes without having to refill. Furthermore, if it is a quality model, it offers optimal ironing. It is not very practical if you have a habit of ironing the clothes you need every day.
  • Wireless Iron. It has a battery charging base. It usually has slightly less power than horizontal irons, although it is a booming model and will soon offer excellent performance. They are certainly very comfortable and allow you to iron quickly.

Why Is the Iron Plate so Important?

The iron plate is one of the essential parts of this appliance. It is the part that must come into contact with your clothes and that which, depending on its quality, will help you iron better.

Its size and shape are also important. In general, a plate with a pronounced tip is recommended to get better in the corners of the items to be ironed.

Also, the plate should have a good number of holes so that the steam is distributed correctly. Do you think that some models have more than 400! The plates of the irons can be made with different materials. Below are the most common options:

  1. Aluminum. They are the cheapest and most common. They heat up quickly but do not have exceptional heat distribution. Besides, they are not very resistant to use, and their heat is worse. They are quite light and slide quite well. If you opt for this material, try looking for a non-stick coating.
  2. Ceramic. It has a ceramic coating that is placed on stainless steel, aluminum, or a combination of the two materials. It distributes the heat over the entire fabric and slips smoothly. Although it is a more delicate material than others, some manufacturers have added an extra coating to reinforce it.
  3. Stainless Steel. It takes longer to reach the desired temperature, but it distributes the heat very well. It glides optimally on clothing and is not easily damaged. Some manufacturers incorporate a titanium coating, which makes them almost eternal but worsens the heat. In general, steel-based plates are more massive than the others.

Why Is Vertical Steaming in An Iron Essential?

As you probably already know, vertical flat irons can be very useful for some clothes or curtains. But if you don’t want to buy one, we advise you to bet on a horizontal metal which, however, has vertical vaporization. You can iron as usual, but also in that position.

What Functions Can Facilitate Cleaning of The Iron?

If you want the iron to last, opt for a self-cleaning model. It is a system that expels air through the steam holes and is used to clean the ducts. It helps eliminate limescale and prevents clogging of this critical area of iron. When this happens, it dramatically affects the quality of ironing.

On the other hand, if you are going to use tap water for ironing, you should also have a descaling system. So the amount of limestone that builds up in the ducts will be less.

Some models have very advanced functions related to this aspect and are particularly recommended in areas where the water is particularly hard.

What Requirements Must an Iron Have to Be Safe?

When we talk about an appliance that combines heat and water, safety is essential. The iron you choose must comply with all relevant regulations, but it is also vital that it offers these functions:

  • Overheating. The appliance must switch off if it overheats excessively.
  • Pilot light. When you plug the iron into the socket, the pilot light turns on while it is heating up, and when it reaches temperature, it goes off.
  • Auto power off. This system automatically disconnects the iron if it remains motionless for a specific time.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of The Iron?

You must have an iron in the house, even if you don’t like ironing. As with everything in life, this appliance also has advantages and disadvantages and, although simple, and we show them in the following table.

Advantages

  1. They make your clothes flawless
  2. They are easy to use
  3. There are many models
  4. They give a characteristic and pleasant smell to the linen

Disadvantages

  1. Sometimes They Don’t Get Rid of All the Creases
  2. They can burn or ruin some fabrics

Purchase Criteria

Are you ready to make your purchase? Almost, but not yet. Before proceeding, we recommend that you evaluate these following essential criteria. They are essential, and you shouldn’t ignore them if you want to make a purchase that you won’t regret. Here are what they are:

  • Temperature and anti-drip system
  • Water tank
  • Vapor
  • Power
  • Weight and ergonomics

Temperature and Anti-Drip System

All irons allow you to adjust the temperature with greater or lesser precision. Traditional models have some sort of wheel so that you can choose from several options, usually three. If you want a more advanced model, opt for one that has a digital display that offers you complete information.

Another aspect related to temperature is the anti-drip system, which is used to prevent the iron from dripping in any position. Almost all alloys now have it, but it is particularly useful when the temperature is shallow.

This requirement is satisfied by some models and prevents the iron from dripping by wetting clothes too much or staining some fabrics.

Water Tank

The water tank must have adequate capacity for your ironing habits. If it is not enough, ironing can be an even more tedious task having to fill it frequently

Vapor

Irons usually have two functions related to this aspect: continuous steam and steam jet. The former is used for constant ironing and should be at least 40 grams per minute (rpm).

The second brings out a greater quantity and is used for the most difficult creases. If it’s around 100 g / min, it’s ideal, but make sure it’s at least 70 g / min.

In addition to the amount of steam, it is necessary to evaluate the pressure with which it comes out. It is a value measured in bars.

Power

The higher the power of the iron, the greater the energy expenditure it produces, but it is also more efficient. If you don’t stretch too much, about 2000 W will suffice, while between 2200 and 2600 W, you already have a new device.

Above these values, ironing will be excellent. So that the consumption is not excessive, try to find an ECO function that allows you to save energy.

Weight and Ergonomics

The most appropriate weight of iron is about one and a half kilos. If it is higher, you will last more effort to iron while a too light one could mean low quality. If this aspect is particularly crucial for you, we recommend an iron with a boiler, which, as we have seen, is lighter since there is no water tank.

As for the iron handle, look for one that is ergonomic, that is, that adapts to the shape of your hand (which could be more complicated if you are left-handed). Also, make sure that the handle is made of a material that doesn’t slip too much, like rubber.
