Buying Guide to Select the Best Smartphone Microphones
If you don’t know which microphone to choose, take a look at our buying guide and review of some simple but particularly popular models on the market that you find in the ranking below.
They are the ones we recommend for the excellent relationship between quality and price: find out what they are.
Type
Microphones can be divided into several categories. As for the technology used to transform the voice into electrical impulses (this is what happens inside each receiver), the main models are two: dynamic and condenser.
The former is ideal for speakers, press conferences, concerts, conferences in general and in all those cases where it is essential to ensure an excellent rendering of the voice rather than the sound. Particularly resistant, they are the cheapest ones; they are portable and can be battery operated.
Condenser ones are specially chosen for studio recordings not only of voice but also of music. They need to be continuously connected to a power source more powerful than a battery.
Microphones can also be classified according to the direction from which they capture sound. The main models are the omnidirectional ones, which pick up the music from whichever direction it comes from.
So the signal never changes. They are used, for example, in live concerts when it is essential to also make public participation.
Then there are the unidirectional or cardioid ones that pick up the sound coming from only one direction; they are used by singers and speakers who are interested in capturing their voice and reducing unwanted environmental noises.
Bidirectional microphones that pick up sound from two directions are great when two people are talking on the same mic, for example in a radio studio.
Wireless
Often the best brand of microphones could be not so much the one that offers better performance in the rendering of the voice or sound but the one that ensures maximum comfort. In this case, you have to consider wireless microphones, wireless ones.
These models can connect to a compatible source device in Bluetooth mode and avoid the hindrance of the connection cable so that they can move more freely at home, on stage or at school when you have to pass the microphone from hand to hand.
In this case, it is necessary to verify the transmission distance covered which can be, for example, 10 or 15 meters, and the battery life. You can find some such models in the ranking below and compare prices.
Functions
Not everyone uses the microphone for professional reasons; indeed, many people buy it to have fun at home. Karaoke lovers, for example, should check if the spotted model supports its function so that they can have fun at home with children or friends.
These models can also act as real loudspeakers and voice recorders. The integrated support present in some of these allows you to fix your smartphone and read the text while singing.
How to Use a Microphone?
When it comes to microphones, the first thing that probably comes to mind is music and singing in particular. True, singers use microphones, or at least most. But more generally, this device is used to make you hear loud, and your voice is clear. Therefore, it can also be used to speak to the public.
The Distance from The Mouth
It will seem nonsense, and perhaps, for this reason, many people underestimate the distance between the microphone and the lips.
When speaking, for example, the receiver should be kept no more than two or three centimetres apart. Extreme closeness to the mouth is also required when signing on low tones.
If you start singing louder, you have to remove the microphone but never go beyond 15 cm wisely. These values, however, must be taken into account also having in mind the quality of the receiver.
Hands-Free
The microphone does not necessarily have to be held in hand. It can be placed on a tripod in the case of a public speech or on an auction when singing live. The sale is essential if you have to play a musical instrument with your hands.
The Spies
The microphone is mainly used to allow the audience to listen to you but, in the case of a live musical performance, it is essential that the singer can also look in order to avoid making a wrong impression with horrible performance. What you need are so-called spies or monitor cases. These are placed in front of the musician. Some use a headset.
Wired or Wireless
The microphone can be connected to an audio system with a cable. This, for obvious reasons, limits freedom of movement, as well as being able to stumble potentially.
The alternative is represented by the wireless microphone, widely used in the professional field. However, there are also cheap wireless microphones, but make sure they are not too affected by the interference caused by any obstacles or other types of electromagnetic waves.
