Best Trumpets Buyer Guide
It is said it sounds easy but in reality learning to play the best trumpet is a task that requires a lot of practice. Clearly what has just been said does not want to be a way to discourage aspiring trumpeters.
The Shades
You must know that it is not enough to go to a shopkeeper and tell him that you want to buy a trumpet. In fact, you must also specify the hue. The most common trumpet is the B flat trumpet. However, you can also choose from those in C, E, E flat and F. The choice of the tonality is personal and must be made taking into account your needs.
The Rod
The rod refers to the internal measurement of the tube. Those who are just starting out should prefer one that is not too wide: the ideal size is M or ML. The larger the rod size, the more powerful lungs are needed to play the instrument.
The Pistons
Another fundamental part of the trumpet are the pistons. The beginner must carefully evaluate what material they are made of. Nickel, for example, is resistant and does not suffer too much from poor maintenance.
It is common in entry level tools. However, it is not uncommon for the latter to have pistons in Monel, a very corrosion-resistant material. It requires more careful maintenance which if done properly allows the mechanics to remain very fluid.
The trumpet is a very versatile instrument with a simple operation: it is a tube with a cylindrical shape, folded. At one end is the bell and on the other the mouthpiece. But let’s say that simple things end here. Now let’s see how to make the most of this tool that has many fans.
The Setting
A lot of time must be devoted to the setting: it takes about two years. An incorrect approach compromises the entire course of study. The most common mistake among beginners is to immediately reach the highest sounds.
This effort of the lips, premature at the beginning, leads to a wrong posture which then becomes difficult to abandon. Therefore, never force the extension to be reached naturally.
The Cleaning
The trumpet must be kept well and therefore cleaned. Know that you need a good dose of patience because to do the cleaning properly you will need an abundant hour. The first phase involves the disassembly of pumps and pistons. Each piece should be dried carefully using a paper towel.
Remove any type of residue. Fill a pan with warm water and a little dish soap and immerse the pistons for 30 minutes taking care to avoid the contact of the upper felts with water. At the same time immerse the pumps in another tank. The same must be done with what remains of the instrument.
If you don’t have it, get a cleaning kit for the trumpet and use the brush to gently clean every element previously left to soak. To clean the mouthpiece you can use a little toothpaste and the special brush (we recommend not the one for the teeth).
Alternatively, you can immerse the mouthpiece for a couple of hours in vinegar, if you don’t mind the smell. Rinse everything with ordinary water and then carefully dry each piece with a soft cloth. Oil the pumps and pistons. Polish the outside with a soft cloth.
The Custody
The trumpet is a delicate instrument and a lot of attention must be paid since even a small bump could ruin it. For this purpose it is always advisable to place it in a good case when not playing, in this way it protects it from accidental knocks.
It is a good instrument, still intended for beginners or in any case for those who play at an amateur level. For the study it is more than good. The intonation is good as is the quality / price ratio. The mechanics are satisfactory with the pistons that work well and do not require large doses of lubricant.
The tone of the trumpet is warm, certainly pleasant to hear. The materials are also good, although we must emphasize that the lacquering is not very accurate. The presence of the case inside which the instrument remains protected from dust and light impacts is appreciated. Transporting it around is very simple thanks to this accessory.
Conclusion
Let’s admit our surprise at this tool which turned out to be much better than we could have imagined. Although suitable for beginners and the studio, it is very performing. In addition, the price seems affordable given its general quality.
The mechanics of this B flat trumpet are good, because they are quite fluid. One of the few flaws that we have encountered is that it is a little harsh on the higher notes. Worthy of note, then, is the semi-rigid case which, in our opinion, ensures the necessary protection for the instrument.
The lacquering is really well done and for the less traditionalists, there are several colors to choose from such as blue, purple, green or black.
