Everything You Need to Know About Airbrush Kits
What Is an Airbrush For?
Generally, the airbrush is used for artistic purposes. Even on an industrial level, it is customary to resort to its services. For example, in the automotive industry, the use of the airbrush is frequent.
We are talking about a pneumatic device that allows you to spray paint on any surface. This is pulverized into thin layers, thanks to which higher precision is obtained.
How Does an Airbrush Work?
Just as the name suggests, it is the air that makes airbrush operation possible. It is a fairly simple but very effective air pressure system. This system allows the paint to escape through the spray gun nozzle. Depending on the type of finish desired, said nozzle could have different dimensions.
On the other hand, the operation of an airbrush also requires a compressor. This compressor allows air to pass from the hose to the nozzle. Some models incorporate it as standard; in other cases, it is necessary to purchase it separately. They are usually not expensive and they are not too bulky and of excellent quality.
What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of An Airbrush?
Advantages
- It allows you to paint evenly.
- Ideal for areas difficult to reach with other tools.
- Perfect for details and shades.
- Improve accuracy.
- Allows professional finishes.
- Easy to use.
- Great versatility.
- Long useful life.
Disadvantages
- Learning to use it requires a lot of patience.
- They are delicate objects.
- You are required to use a compressor.
How Many Types of Airbrush Are There?
There are two different types of airbrushes. Mainly the spray guns all work in the same way. We have already seen it at the beginning of this section: they use air to move the ink so that it is sprayed through the nozzle.
However, within this system, there are two different mechanisms. We are talking about gravity airbrushes and suction airbrushes.
- Suction Spray Gun: This type of spray gun has a paint tank in the lower part of the device. Therefore, the suction spray guns suck the paint. Something obvious if we consider their name. They are easy to clean and useful in many fields.
- Gravity Spray Gun: This alternative works in reverse. In this case, the paint tank is located on the top of the spray gun. The main mechanism is gravity, so the paint falls off because of its weight. Gravity spray guns make better use of the paint, although they are more difficult to disassemble for cleaning.
Difference Between Single Action Airbrushes and Double Action Airbrushes?
In addition to the differences between suction and spray guns, we have to talk about the trigger action that makes them work. There are single-action airbrushes and double-action airbrushes. Again, there is no better alternative than the other. In any case, an option will be more suitable for you. We compare them below:
- Single Action Spray Gun: In this case, the spray gun allows only the trigger pressure. To adjust the amount of paint you want to use, you will need to loosen or tighten a specific screw. The big advantage of single-action airbrushes is that they are cheaper and easier to use.
- Double Action Spray Gun: Double-action spray guns can be more comfortable as the amount of paint available can be adjusted by the trigger itself. With this, you get precision adaptable to any situation. To use this extra, you have to pull the trigger upwards. They are more professional.

What Is the Airbrush Compressor?
The airbrush compressor is a type of air compressor indispensable for the operation of any economic or high-end airbrush. When you approach this world, you must be aware that without a compressor, you will not be able to make it work. Some models incorporate a compressor. Others, on the contrary, will force you to buy it separately.
As for the instrument, it is essential because it compresses the air in the chamber thanks to one or more pistons that go to the tube, and it is here that the pressure necessary to operate the spray gun is generated.
There are compressors with tanks that allow the accumulation of compressed air to work longer. If they don’t have a tank, the pressure is direct.
Level of Experience
Some airbrushes are easier to handle than others. Therefore, you should buy one based on your experience. Have you already had the opportunity to use it? Then you can think of a gravity airbrush. On the contrary, if you are looking for your first airbrush, the best option is the suction airbrush. There will always be time to buy another!
Nozzle
The nozzle is the fundamental part of the airbrushes, economy, or not. You should pay attention to these details before investing your money. Depending on the type of airbrush you buy, you will come across different situations:
- The simpler ones usually come with wide nozzles, so they are not a good choice for painting fine lines or trying out precision details.
- Many of the best airbrushes, cheap or not, allow you to use different nozzles. These are ideal if you are looking for versatility.
- If you are not looking for an exceptional or highly detailed finish, you can use almost any nozzle. If you need the highest levels of detail, choose the ones with the narrowest nozzles.
Maintenance
Airbrushes are rather sophisticated devices. This requires constant maintenance. If you are not very familiar with these devices, it is better to avoid gravity spray guns since they are more difficult to disassemble and, therefore, also to clean. In contrast, suction spray guns are much easier to clean and maintain in good condition.
Compressor
The compressor is essential for an airbrush. Without it, you won’t be able to make it work. Some models are equipped with an integrated compressor or, at least, as part of the package. Better to opt for this type of option if you are taking your first steps. Otherwise, compressors with tanks are a better choice, because, in this way, the engine will not run continuously.
Control Ability
Depending on how you want to use the spray gun, you will need more or less control. If you want to be able to instantly adjust the amount of paint, choose a double-action airbrush. If you prefer something more direct, opt for single action airbrushes. Remember, however, that in these cases, the regulation is a bit more complex and difficult.
