Music and technology, two words that in the last century have seen their paths come together, this union have allowed the birth of incredible musical equipment.

A striking example of the product of these two arts is certainly headphones. Who among us has never used a couple of these strange but, at the same time, beautiful objects?

How to Choose Best Electronic Ear Muffs?

Performance

Over-ear or circumaural headphones fully cover the ear (including the auricle) and rest on the sides of the head with substantial padding.

They are larger and heavier than on-ear headphones but allow better isolation from external noise and, therefore, greater listening comfort.

Since these are instruments designed above all to allow quality musical listening, the first factor we suggest to take into consideration when choosing is undoubtedly the one relating to performance.

In evaluating the performance of a model, we recommend considering some parameters, which are the range of frequencies covered, the impedance value, the sensitivity, and the size of the driver. Let’s see them in detail one by one.

Frequency

The human ear can perceive sounds in the frequency range between approximately 20 Hz and 20 kHz. However, we always remember that acoustic sensitivity is subjective and may suffer drops caused by acoustic traumas, diseases, and the gradual progress of the ‘age.

The headphones on the market cover the spectrum of frequencies perceivable by the human ear, but they can have an even greater range.

Some headphones produce acoustic waves at frequencies such as infrasound and ultrasound. In essence, these sounds, although not audible, guarantee higher reproduction fidelity and therefore play an essential role in defining the quality of the music.

Impedance

Impedance is also a significant parameter to consider because it is an indicative value of how clean the reproduced sound is.

in technical terms, it expresses an alternating current electromagnetic field is crossing the resistance of a coil, and in the particular case of headphones is the resistance encountered by the electrical signal before being converted into a sound wave.

The impedance value varies significantly from product to product. The reference values of the over-ear headphones are higher than those of other types, and in fact, range from a minimum of 18 Ohm up to a maximum of 600 Ohm.

The higher the impedance value, i.e., the lower the distortions of the sound, and therefore the more precise and clean the yield.

On the other hand, with the same volume of output from the source, the headphones with higher impedance will reproduce a more attenuated sound, but of more top quality because it is filtered more by the headphone circuit.

For this reason, high impedance headphones can be enhanced with an amplifier that allows you to turn up the volume. On the contrary, with a lower impedance. It will be possible to listen even at high volumes; however, at the expense of fidelity and sound quality.

Driver

The driver is the small speaker contained in the headphone stand. Generally in standard headphones, the drivers are at most two, one on each side.

In the very high-end headphones, you can also find two drivers per side: one dedicated to low tones and one for medium and high tones.

The aspect of paying attention to for the driver is their size: the larger the diameter, the better the reproduction quality. The recommended width of the drivers for over-ear headphones is between a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 50 mm.

Sensitivity

Another significant aspect for evaluating the performance of the headphones is sensitivity: it indicates the volume of sound output in decibels (dB).

The most common values for over-ear headphones on the market are around 100 dB, an average, therefore not particularly high but compensated by the acoustic insulation that this type of headphones usually guarantees.

Acoustic Design

The second factor that we consider essential to consider in the evaluation of the headphones is that related to their acoustic design.

In particular, in the assessment of the acoustic design of the headphones, dynamics is particularly important, because it influences the quality of the music reproduction but also the type of situation in which it is possible to use the headphones.

The closed-dynamic headphones have no holes on the back of the pavilions and are therefore entirely closed: consequently, they allow you to isolate very well from external noise (at the level of insulation this is undoubtedly the best type). At the same time limit the output of the sound in the opposite direction.

They are, therefore, particularly suitable for use in environments where it is necessary not to disturb or in noisy environments.

On the contrary, the open, dynamic headphones are equipped with openings on the back of the pavilions and thus allow a greater naturalness of listening.

In essence, they usually are considered of higher quality since you do not create an “acoustic chamber” where the sound can play in some measure, rumble.

However, let us note that those around you can perceive sounds. Open, dynamic headphones are more suitable for home use if you have an excellent system and want high fidelity music reproduction.

Then there is a third type of dynamic, the semi-open one, which, as the name suggests, is a sort of middle ground between the other two: headphones of this type, therefore, allow external noise to penetrate in part, but not as much as open-type headphones.

Structure

Let’s now move on to the third factor to consider in the choice, that relating to the structural aspects of the headphones.

As previously anticipated, the structure of the over-ear headphones differs from the other types by the critical dimensions of the pavilions that cover the external ear entirely.

Which are covered with a large and soft cushion that guarantees better comfort and acoustic insulation than, for example, to on-ear headphones.

In particular, we suggest evaluating the bow. How the headband can adapt and fit heads of different sizes will be treated in another section.

Here we deal instead with the advantages that a headband can offer when headphones are not used. In some cases, the headband is particularly flexible or has joints through which the headphones are foldable and therefore are less bulky to store or transport.

The cable exit system must also be assessed: the cable can come out from both headphone pavilions (in this case, it is called bilateral) or from one.

If you intend to use headphones while traveling in the city or to travel, the second variant with the cable on one side will be advisable, because it is more comfortable and easier to manage on the move.

Usually, the headphones on the market have a fixed cable, but you can find models, such as the one in the photo below, whose cable can be removed and possibly replaced with one of different quality or length. In some cases, by the way, there are also spare cables attached.

Comfort

Since the over-ear headphones are particularly heavy and bulky, support is of great importance for the choice. By this term.

We, therefore, mean all the ergonomic devices and also some additional accessory functions that make the practical use of the headphones comfortable even for prolonged periods.

The main ergonomic features concern the weight and size of the headphones, the type of padding, the available adjustments, and the type of cable. Let’s see these elements in detail.

Weight and Size

We have already said that over-ear headphones are headphones that aim to offer excellent sound quality, at the expense of weight and size: sometimes they can be less practical than on-ear headphones, especially in prolonged use and away from home. We want to point out that a good relatively light over-ear headphone can weigh about 200 g.

Padding

The padding can be present both on the pavilions and the headband, and it is fundamental to determine the wearability of the headphones.

The padding on the buildings plays a vital role to cushion the pressure exerted by the cuff on the sides of the head, for this reason, it is necessary that the materials used in contact with the skin are really soft.

Comfortable and that, possibly, they do not make you sweat. In this regard, we point out that for those who wear glasses, the over-ear headphones may be uncomfortable, putting pressure on the arms behind the ears, which in the long run can be annoying.

The padding can also be present on the headband: it constitutes an element of weight and bulk more, but it helps to relieve the pressure of the cuff, and its presence is particularly relevant for those with little hair.

In some cases, the padding, both in the pavilions and in the arch, can be removed and washed or replaced with others.
In the photo below, you can see an example of a cap with padding on the headband and the pavilions.
