Best Flat Irons Buyer Guide
By opting for a good quality iron with cutting edge features, ironing will be more comfortable and will save you precious time, to devote to more fun activities.
Below we offer you our purchase guide in which you will find information on the aspects to be taken into account when you have to choose which iron to buy. Below you will find our ranking with the review of the most popular models on the market. Compare prices and characteristics of the recommended products, in a few minutes you could find just what you were looking for.
The Boiler
The first aspect to consider when choosing an iron is linked both to the frequency of use and to the number of clothes, towels and sheets that you usually find yourself having to iron. The higher the load and rate of the operation, the more critical it will be to have an iron capable of guaranteeing long autonomy and comfort of use.
From this point of view, the boiler is a factor that cannot be ignored and, in case you often have mountains of clothes to iron, it is advisable to opt for a model that has it outside.
These irons have a much larger tank which prolongs the autonomy of use of the appliance compared to those that have incorporated it. In contrast, the latter boasts a very small footprint, especially when you have to store them after use. Models with an external boiler take up much more space.
There is also a third alternative represented by dry irons, which work without using steam. This type of product has reduced weight and dimensions and represents an option to be taken into account if you need a portable model, for example, to be packed before leaving for holidays.
For those who always have many clothes to iron, especially bulky ones, such as B & Bs and small hospitality businesses, it may be convenient to find your way around an ironing press.
The Plate Is Essential
The material with which the plate is made is of great importance. On the other hand, it is the element that is in contact with the fabric, and that determines the smoothness of the iron and the goodness of the result.
This element can be made of stainless steel, satin or enameled aluminum, or Teflon. Each of these has different characteristics of friction, sale price, and resistance but all are able to conduct heat in an optimal way, avoiding that it also spreads to the rest of the body of the iron board. The steel and Teflon plates tend to heat uniformly while in the aluminum ones the heat is concentrated more in the tip.
Another important discriminant is that of the number of holes present, in particular those on the tip, because it is on their quantity and arrangement that the uniform supply of steam depends.
The “enemy” Limestone
The water that is used to fill the boiler (typically that of the house tap) is usually rather hard and therefore rich in Limestone. By using the iron with a specific frequency, scale builds up in the tank with the consequence that the holes become clogged and the steam delivery is much less effective.
Therefore, consider buying a model with functional anti-limescale capacity and keep in mind that the irons of the best brands often have self-cleaning systems or replaceable cartridges. Whatever appliance you choose, however, it is always good to empty and dry the tank after each use.
Finally, opt for an iron with an ergonomic handle, which best suits the size of your hand and which has a weight around one and a half kilos, so as not to tire too much during use.
Compact and Convenient to Use
The DW6010 iron, produced by the well-known German brand Rowenta, is an economic model with a built-in boiler designed specifically for non-intensive but regular domestic use.
It is ideal especially for those who cannot manage a steam iron with an external boiler, both in terms of size and price, which is decidedly higher than the models with the built-in pot; its dimensions are quite compact, and its design is very appealing, thanks to the colouring in black and bright green and the ornamental motif along the sides at the base.
The handle is ergonomic, with the steam release button in the upper position, to make the grip comfortable; according to buyers, it is also light enough not to strain the arm during use.
Powerful
Despite its compact size, the Rowenta DW6010 iron offers a power of 2,400 watts, enough to guarantee excellent ironing performance, especially considering the particular MICRO STEAM 400 3De technology used to make its plate.
The latter is obtained from a steel plate on which a laser digs 400 micro-holes, to allow uniform emission of steam, optimizing water consumption and reducing energy consumption.
In this respect, moreover, the DW6010 iron is also equipped with the Eco Intelligence function, which allows you to reduce its energy consumption by 30% compared to any other steam iron of a similar class.
The boiler is equally powerful and allows a continuous supply of steam with a flow of 40 grams per minute, or concentrate it in a powerful jet with a stream of 180 grams per minute, to eliminate even the most resistant creases on thick and dry fabrics.
Integrated Anti-Limescale System
The Rowenta DW6010 iron is also appreciated for its good structural quality and durability; the plate is made of high-quality stainless steel. Moreover, the iron also integrates a particular function that prevents the accumulation of limescale inside it, keeping the steam performance and ironing results constant over time.
The only limitations of the DW6010, according to some buyers, are the steam selector which makes a little play in its seat. Therefore one must be careful not to move it during use, and the capacity of the boiler, which must be filled several times if you have to iron for more than half an hour.
