Things to Consider Before Buying Laser Meters
Quality
Those who compare prices and performance will have noticed the significant difference between the various laser meters on the market. To find the right one, first of all, understand what your needs are and, therefore, choose the best model in terms of quality/price ratio.
The most efficient spacers can cost even more than 1,000 euros but, if you plan to use it only for some sporadic measurements at home, they are models that, obviously, are not for you.
If, on the other hand, you are a professional and use these tools daily, you will need a reliable and resistant spacer that is not excessively expensive.
As you can read in the list of products below, there is no shortage of highly accurate and versatile tools sold at an affordable price, and, not surprisingly, they are also often the most appreciated by users.
As regards the services offered, precision is one of the essential requirements, and, especially for professionals in the construction sector, a deviation of ± 1 mm is very different from one of ± 2 mm because it affects the correct execution of a project.
Another fundamental parameter to consider is the maximum range and, that is, how far the laser beam can go. For small surveys in the house, there should be no problems.
But in a construction site or in a vast outdoor area, even a range of 100 or 150 meters may prove insufficient; better to focus on more powerful meters that allow measurements over greater distances and that are effective even in conditions of poor visibility.
Functions and Ease of Use
Often the best brand of laser meters for users is the one that makes the most versatile and feature-rich models that can be used in a more significant number of situations.
The spacers, in fact, despite its name, are not limited to measure the distance between the subject and a surface but are also able to provide a measurement of areas and volumes. Not only.
They should be able to allow continuous measurements and provide for the possibility of adding and subtracting them. These and other functions have the advantage of simplifying and speeding up the work because it will be possible to obtain all the surveys that are needed quickly.
It is also essential that the meter is comfortable and practical to use. For example, the thread that allows it to be fixed on a tripod should never be missing to ensure more excellent stability and, therefore, accuracy in the measurement.
The screen is generally large and easy to read and, above all, backlit in order to clearly display data even in the evening or in poorly lit areas.
The opposite problem is represented by the blinding sun, which in some cases makes the display difficult to read, a no small nuisance for those who work on a building site in broad daylight.
Resistance and Impermeability
If you are a professional and you often use meters, you should also pay attention to the materials with which these instruments are built because you may prefer the more solid and robust ones that resist falls even from a certain height.
At the same time, pay attention to the degree of protection – expressed with the initials IP followed by two numbers – with which they are classified.
An IP54 meter, for example, is protected from dust and water splashes, while an IP65 model boasts total protection from dust and also from jets from water and, therefore, not only from simple splashes.
First of All Precision
A good laser meter must first be precise. We must say that absolute accuracy is almost considered a pipe dream. The best models on the market, in fact, have tolerance of error ranging from 1 mm more or less than the distance shown on display.
Models that offer a technical tolerance higher than this figure are undoubtedly not ideal for professionals who cannot have such a high margin of error, especially when it comes to civil or industrial construction.
The models with a tolerance of 2 or more millimeters can be used for do-it-yourself at home when you need to take a measurement, and you can have “play” so as not to make a mistake in choosing the wardrobe to be inserted in the bedroom or for any other need.
Maximum Capacity
Another critical feature for those who need to purchase a laser meter for their work is the maximum range that can be achieved. Those who work on-site will have to opt for models with an extensive maximum range, which exceeds 150 meters abundantly, a measure proposed by medium / low-end laser meters.
Given the importance of this tool for your work, you will have to expect to spend a few euros, in some cases, even more than a thousand to have a reliable product in your hands that allows you to measure very long distances.
Functions
A good laser meter must not only be able to detect the distance from the point to point, but also to offer other functions that can somehow facilitate the work when you are taking measurements in a particular place or for a specific purpose.
The best models also allow you to detect the area or volume of a room, can make continuous measurements, and will enable you to perform subtractions and additions to the recorded measurements, all characteristics that, during a working day, you might need and that in practice simplify their business.
Sturdy and Legible
The laser meter will most likely be used on-site and therefore, may be subject to dust, water, and mud. To be evaluated at the time of purchase is, therefore, its degree of protection, which is indicated with the initials IP followed by a digit.
An IP65 model, for example, is able to withstand water jets and is totally insensitive to dust. Significant is also the display which should show the figures in a legible way and also be backlit, in case you need to use the meter in poorly lit areas. At the same time, a good display should not reflect sunlight.
