The moths of the clothes, or of the fabrics that you want to say, are morphologically insects very similar to common butterflies.
If the latter, however, limit themselves to flitting innocently inside our homes, the moths of the clothes are responsible for those holes so unsightly that they often and willingly appear suddenly on shirts and clothing.
Its nature naturally attracts this type of insect to silk, wool and cotton: manages to pierce the fibres with disarming simplicity, irreparably ruining our favourite garments.

Things to Consider Before Buying Moth Traps
How Does the Infestation of Clothes Moths Occur?
Clothes moths tend to settle, especially in wardrobes and walk-in closets where damp or dirty fabrics lie. The infestation occurs very quickly: these insects reproduce very quickly inside drawers and wardrobes, often without the human even noticing.
These are insidious insects, in the sense that they lay their eggs in the dark and that the larvae are not visible to the naked eye.
The only alarm bell could be given by the presence of tiny butterflies fluttering among our clothes, a sign that the attack has already taken place and that the infestation has already progressed.
At this point it is, therefore, necessary to run for cover in the shortest possible time, putting into practice all the tricks and possible remedies to exterminate the moth colony of clothes that have well thought of settling in our closet.
Natural Remedies to Get Rid of Clothes Moths
In the past, mothballs were used to eliminate moths from clothes. Today it is no longer necessary to resort to chemicals that it is never advisable to inhale because it has been scientifically proven that there are excellent natural remedies that allow you to achieve the same results.
Once the presence of an insect colony in the middle of our clothing has been ascertained, the first thing to do is to empty the wardrobe.
The clothes will have to be examined carefully and individually, to sort those that have already been damaged by the moths on the clothes.
Ruined woollen clothes must be placed in special plastic bags and left in the freezer for at least 48 hours so that the freezing temperature of the freezer can kill the larvae that have nestled in the middle of the fibres.
After this period we can take them out and leave them outdoors for a couple of days, then wash them first with water and vinegar and finally with a special neutral sanitizing soap.
As for the other fabrics, it will be sufficient to leave them to soak in boiling water for about fifteen minutes.
How to Prevent Damage
The most effective weapon at our disposal is the cleaning of clothes at every change of season. In essence, a small residue of sweat in a garment worn even once is enough to attract this insect, precisely because it is used to living in contact with animals and recognizes the smell.
What to Do?
- At the Time of The Change of Season, Wash the Garments You Have Worn Well, with Hot or Dry Water, Before Storing Them;
however, unused items should be brushed vigorously and left to air in the sun before putting them back in the closet; - Uses Plastic Bags and Zippered Bags to Store Sweaters, Winter Jackets and Coats;
- Vacuum the Carpets Well with A Vacuum Cleaner and Roll Them in A Closed Container Together with A Mothproof Product;
if you suspect that your wardrobe has been attached, empty it and clean it with a damp cloth impregnated with water, vinegar or baking soda or with a spray degreaser, paying attention also to the most hidden corners and points.
Beware of Children and Animals.
Moth protection products are potentially dangerous products. Therefore they must be used in the right way:
- Avoid direct contact with clothes and skin and use bags to store them;
- Attention to children: do not leave the products unattended, especially if they are shaped like balls and have bright colours because they could be mistaken for candy;
- Permethrin is highly toxic to cats: if you have one at home use other active ingredients, such as transfluthrin;
- Keep the original packaging containing the name of the active substance and in the event of accident contact the national poison control centre.
- In case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
