What Is a Smart Security Camera For?
As the name also says, the primary use of the “heirs” of the IP cameras is undoubtedly that of home control. Thanks to their features – which we will evaluate in detail shortly – the surveillance cameras allow you to control your home while you are at work, having dinner outside or on vacation.
This, however, is only one of the possible uses of the smart video surveillance systems on the market today: the same functions designed for home security can be used.
For example, to control what the dog does while we are not with him (although it is worth saying, there are ad hoc devices that allow you are interacting remotely with our four-legged friends ) or to keep an eye on the baby while playing in his room or the crib (a sort of smart baby monitor with a camera).
How to Choose the Video Surveillance Camera
When you are deciding which surveillance camera to buy, some features cannot be missing. Scrolling through the list of technical specifications of the video surveillance camera, it will be necessary to carefully check the resolution of the images and the visual field.
Whether or not night vision is present, check the user interface of the app and the web platform (just a simple search on Google Images or the store of your mobile operating system), such as data protection and privacy systems, how to record images (on SD card or in the cloud) and the power supply.
Image Quality and Field of View Video Surveillance Camera
The first factor to consider when buying a security camera is, without a shadow of a doubt, image quality. For the shots to be entirely visible, the device must be equipped with at least a sensor with HD resolution (1280×720 pixels).
As it is easy to understand, however, if our budget allows it, it is advisable to buy a video surveillance camera with FullHD resolution (1920×1080 pixels) or, even, 4K. Of course, the difference in price is more than sensitive, but more precise and more defined images will be available.
Another “video” factor to consider is that of the field of view and the angle of view. Unless you want to set up a video surveillance system consisting of three or more cameras, you will have to purchase a device that has the broadest possible field of view.
The ideal would be a surveillance camera with a 180 ° viewing angle; if you don’t find it, look for one with the widest possible aperture.
Some devices allow you to access images via the Internet at any time: just launch the app on your smartphone or access the web platform to see what happens at home via streaming whenever you want.
Other video surveillance cameras, usually cheaper, are activated only if you detect some movement and start a recording to be consulted life or at a later time. Depending on your needs, check that the smart video surveillance system allows streaming access at your convenience.
Night Vision Video Surveillance Camera
Resolution and field of view, however, can do little at night if the smart security camera you are about to purchase is not equipped for night vision.
If you want to control the rooms in your home in low light conditions, the device must have a particularly sensitive sensor: check that this feature is included in the technical characteristics of the surveillance cameras that you keep an eye on.
How to Use Video Surveillance Camera from App or Web
Compared to traditional video surveillance systems, smart cameras can be connected to the network (both via Ethernet cable and via Wi-Fi) and also controlled remotely.
Before choosing which security camera to buy, check that the user interface is intuitive and straightforward to use: in case of an emergency, in fact, it is always better to have the possibility to quickly access the images and commands of the camera, instead of wasting time between buttons and unclear shots.
To get an idea of how to use the surveillance camera from the app or the web, just a simple search for images on the Internet and browse through the many results that appear: if you can, choose the camera with the most straightforward and most immediate user interface.
Security Camera Recording Mode
In addition to streaming, smart surveillance cameras offer different recording modes: the best known are cloud recording and microSD card recording. The choice, in this case, will be dictated primarily by one’s personal needs.
The microSD card allows you to have (almost) no recording limits: as long as there is space, the camera will continue to record and so we could download it to PC and watch it whenever we want.
The cloud solution, on the other hand, maybe more convenient for those who are often away from home and cannot rely on SD cards but may have severe limitations on the duration and, above all, costs.
The recording clouds are often offered as additional services, and I require activation of a daily, weekly or monthly subscription. In short, do your accounts well and see what is most in line with your needs (and financial resources).
Power Supply for Video Surveillance Cameras
The vast majority of smart security cameras are equipped with a power cable and work only if connected to the electrical system.
Some, however, are also equipped with a battery and allow you to continue recording even in the event of a blackout or if we do not have the possibility to connect the device to a power outlet.
Extra Functionality
To beat the competition, became more reliable and more durable, and getting more and more demanding customers, many manufacturers have begun to offer extra functionality (usually for a fee) that will make even smarter the home surveillance system.
Some video surveillance cameras, for example, are equipped with facial recognition, which will allow you to disable the “alarm” system and send notifications if a face known to us enters the house (and also to the camera, of course).
