Buying Guide to Select the Best Sanders

In this guide, you will find a ranking of the best brands currently on the market. Read the reviews of each product carefully and compare the prices and offers of the various models, so you will be able to choose the one that best meets your needs.

Choice of Model

If you are passionate about do-it-yourself, you will know well that there are several tools that can be particularly useful for carrying out restoration or renovation works; one of these tools is the sander.

It is a power tool suitable for removing irregularities from surfaces and for polishing metal, ceramic, wood and other objects.

There are many versions of this appliance, some of which are of the “entry level” type, ie for hobbyists and enthusiasts who do not need a particularly sophisticated tool for sanding. However, despite being semi-professional devices, they are able to offer excellent results on small and large surfaces.

Other more advanced products, on the other hand, are used in construction sites, factories and workshops, to carry out more demanding and more far-reaching jobs; in this second case the price of the item is much higher than that of a model for hobbyists.

Type of Operation

Thanks to the rotary and oscillatory movement generated by the motor, the sander is able to sand and smooth the surface on which you intend to work.

Generally this type of mechanism is common to all sanders which are divided into three main categories: portable, belt and orbital.

Portable ones are recommended for a type of hobby use; in fact they are small and light and make handling their strong point, even if they do not lend themselves very much to heavy and intense processes.

The belt models are indicated for more “coarse” types of sanding, such as removing excess material from a surface, and then finishing it more precisely.

The right middle ground between the two variants we have just seen is probably the orbital sander. This ensures good versatility as well as greater resistance to more intense work on larger surfaces.

Sanding paper is applied over the orbits of the machine, the grain of which varies according to the type of sanding to be carried out. Furthermore, thanks to the holes on the discs, the dust produced during sanding is sucked away, for the benefit of cleaning the working environment.

Abrasive Power

Before buying a sander, consider carefully the power of this tool, choosing the right model based on the type of use and its frequency of use.

The type of materials to operate on will also be decisive in the choice, given that the power of the motor is directly proportional to the hardness of the surface to be sanded.

As for the type of power supply, there are power tools that work by connecting them directly to a power outlet and those powered by batteries.

The former are usually indicated for professional use, while the latter are more suitable for hobby use and particularly appreciated for the freedom of movement they can offer. Cheaper sanders generally use sandpaper or sandpaper as an abrasive sheet, suitable for wood or surfaces that do not require perfect sanding.

If instead you have to work on metal surfaces, it is better to use emery cloth, while silicon carbide and tungsten carbide are perfect for paint stripping, even on a professional level.

The purchase of a sander is an investment that sooner or later will face people who love working with wood. With this tool you can eliminate small imperfections on the surface, making it smooth and ready for painting or other treatment.

Along our buying guide we have described the main features of the models that the market offers, now let’s see some suggestions for a correct use.

Use the Sander only On Suitable Surfaces

The sander is designed for use on surfaces such as wood. Trying to use it on concrete or steel means a fast consumption of sandpaper and sometimes it can even get to the overheating of the engine.

It makes many laps but cannot do its job, also involving a considerable energy consumption. Before testing the device on different materials, consult the information given by the manufacturer.

Choose the Sandpaper

The first thing to do to start working with this tool is to fix the sandpaper. Not all cards are the same: depending on the grain size you have a more or less fine card.

The lower the grain size, the coarser the paper (ranging from a minimum of 40 to 400 for very thin paper). Generally, the first steps take place with the coarser grain, then we proceed with the thinner one up to the very thin one.

Keep in mind, however, that common sheets cannot be used with the sander, because each model could have its specific shape (triangular, circular, roller).

Inserting or replacing the sandpaper is very simple, just lift the old sheet and place the new one, pressing on the base of the sander. Most models have velcro (or similar) to ensure that the sheet remains firm.

Beware of Dust and Debris

Not all sanders are equipped with a dust and debris collector. In fact, this tank does not trap every particle but does a satisfying job anyway.

Having lots of debris in the workspace (and in the air) is unhealthy, especially for those with respiratory problems or allergies. The ideal would be to work with eye protection and a filtering facial mask. Also, keep in mind that this tool could cause a lot of noise, before buying a product you could check that there are no negative reviews about this aspect.

What Precautions to Take?

It is not difficult to use this type of appliance, but it is important to have a good grip when sanding. If you are not very familiar with this device, choose a model with automatic speed.

In any case, with any easily accessible buttons, to avoid accidents while working. If you feel that the sander is overheating, unplug the power cord and wait for it to cool down. It is also important to remember to lubricate the engine from time to time.

Don’t Exert Too Much Force

Using the sander does not require much effort: just move the appliance close to the surface to see it at work, all you have to do is press gently on the surface to be treated and make a movement that goes back and forth. The only times you need to use a little pressure is with large areas or spots.
