Buyer Guide to Choose the Best Quiet Range Hoods

With External Drain or Without?

Compare prices but, above all, prefer the suction model most suitable for the type of hob you have in the kitchen. If you have gas stoves, the hood with a visible suction pipe that ends in the classic tube that points towards the outside of your building is more suitable.

The model equipped with suction filters that return the purified air into circulation is less effective in terms of preventing gas leakage but suitable for eliminating bad smells produced during cooking. It is a choice to keep in mind, especially if it is not possible to drill a wall or a kitchen window.

It is certainly not the only discriminant in the choice of the hood. There are several models that can be fixed directly to the wall or disappear inside the body of an old model or in the structure of the kitchen itself.

The most particular models are those designed to serve island hobs. In this case, check the compatibility of the hood well with the possibility of not being fixed only with brackets or side hooks.

The Suction Power and Consumption on The Bill

The size of the hood directly affects its suction power. Therefore it must be equal to or larger than the hob. In the ranking that you find below, different solutions are proposed, including those considerably more significant on the same floor: in this case, the hood takes on a role as a piece of furniture capable of enhancing the kitchen itself.

The suction power of the hood is directly responsible for the air purification capacity. Prefer those models that can offer a replacement that can be measured in about six to eight times the volume of the room air.

The minimum power to be sought for medium-sized kitchens is around 400/500 cubic meters of air per hour, evaluates your real need based on this parameter.

The consumption of these appliances is not exciting, and there are often hoods in energy class E or F. But, considering that the time in which these appliances will remain in operation will not be significant, the bill at the end of the month should not be affected much.

Design and Silence

Other data to research before deciding on the purchase of a kitchen hood is the sound impact that is expressed in decibels. It certainly does not constitute a secondary aspect but requires careful analysis, mainly if the kitchen borders on the bedrooms of one’s own house or with those of the neighbors.

The aesthetics of the hoods are very varied and designed to make users with different tastes happy, consider whether the extractor hood alone is able to provide further value to the kitchen and its furnishings and if the style matches well with the type of furniture already present in your modular.

Programmable and Easy to Manage Functions

The possibility of deciding when the hood is to be activated and for how long, expands its range of possible uses. Still, from the front control panel, it is possible to decide which of the three levels is the most suitable based on the type of preparation and its fragrances.

If you prefer, you can mount carbon filters on the hood. It is an excellent solution to use if you need to purify the air inside the kitchen but without needing a fireplace to the outside.

It is not always possible to drill a hole, on the window or on the wall of the kitchen, in this case, one of the most frequently used solutions is to suck the air to remove the humidity from the hob and put it back into the room.

The advantage is that of delaying the deleterious effect of constant exposure to steam, but the quality of the air can only be improved if it is expertly filtered: coal is well suited for this purpose.

How to Use a Quiet Range Hood?

Check the Noise Level

Once put into operation, check the sound level produced by the hood. In case you hear excessive sounds or noises, take care to stop the process and call a technician to test the correct operation of the whole.

Clean the Filters Regularly

In the presence of a filtering area, it is useful to understand what type of filtering your hood does and make sure to remove grease residues that can accumulate over time. In the case of a metal grill, a passage by hand or in the dishwasher is useful. For activated carbon filters, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Check the Operation of The Light

To have an adequately illuminated work area, most of the hoods have one or more bulbs. In case of malfunction, we suggest you check the integrity of the lamp. Having a work surface and a view of the pots and pans on the fire is an additional index of safety.

Protect the Edges

It often happens that height and people who turn or work in the kitchen do not get along very well. Check the structure of your hood by placing soft protections to eliminate the thought of bumps and unpleasant cuts.

Unplug It

In case of checks and maintenance, it is necessary to remove the connection to the electricity or turn off the switch to which the hood is connected. Do not press buttons with wet hands, and in the absence of a command that excludes the passage of electricity, disconnect the central power supply.

Do Not Place the Appliance Yourself

In the presence of strong odors or of minimal aspirated smoke, do not take the initiative and do not disassemble the components. In addition to irreparably damaging the object, you could void the warranty.

Don’t Open the Windows.

When commissioning, creating other air circulation zones reduces the beneficial effects and the primary purpose for which the hood was made.

Keep the Instructions

When you are familiar with the appliance, we suggest you not to neglect the reading of the manual. Store everything in a safe and easily accessible place if needed.

Adjust Times and Power

Before you put yourself in the kitchen, understand the type of food you are going to prepare. You can switch on the hood a few minutes before starting the stove. In the case of preparations with the creation of strong odors, at the end of cooking, wait five minutes, giving the hood time to remove the remaining odors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Does an Extractor Hood Work?

The function of the extractor hood is to eliminate the bad smells that accumulate when cooking, through a filtering or aspiration system. On the basis of this criterion, in fact, we can distinguish two types of hoods: aspirating and filtering ones.

The first sucks the air and conveys it to the outside, through a tube; the second one sucks in the air, cleans it through a filtration system, and then puts it back into circulation inside the kitchen.

How Is an Extractor Hood Made?

The extractor hood has a straightforward structure, composed precisely of an external body, which can be made of metal or plastic, on which there are control buttons for activating various functions and also the light, usually integrated.

Inside there is also the suction unit, a system that sucks the air during cooking. Finally, there is a grease filter, designed to retain the ointments used for the preparation of food. Sometimes there are several, very often they can be washed and replaced after some time with ease.

How to Clean the Filters of The Extractor Hood?

First of all, it is good to keep in mind that, in order to ensure the proper functioning of the hood, it is advisable to clean the filters at least every three months.

Another aspect to consider is that the grease filters are metallic, so you can wash them by hand, immersing them in hot water mixed with soap or even in the dishwasher.

Another very effective method is to boil some water, add baking soda, and leave the filters inside for a few hours. The action of the bicarbonate will be to degrease and sanitize them, so it will be sufficient to dry them and put them back in place.

How to Install an Extractor Hood?

If you are replacing an old hood with a new one, you will naturally have to disassemble the one already installed before proceeding to place the original purchase. If, on the other hand, you have to create all the housings from scratch, take into account the instructions attached, to understand where to place the vent.

Usually, inside the package, there is a template: place it on the wall and draw its outline, before proceeding with the drill and drilling. At this point, insert the ventilation tube, which must end outside the house.

Mark with a pencil all the positions in which to place cable and screws, so as not to do things haphazardly and find yourself with a hood-mounted crooked. Then place the support screws in the wall, making sure they penetrate deep enough.

If you find yourself in front of tiles, be very careful, because you could break them using excessive force. Before definitively fixing the screws, check that the vent is aligned with the ventilation tube.

Now connect the cables from the wall to the hood, with the foresight to associate the black and the white ones and to put the green to the designated screw, located inside the hat. Then position the filters and the appropriate gaskets, then turn on the power to check they work properly.

How to Repair the Extractor Hood that Is Not Working?

There may be different types of problems concerning the hood malfunction. If it does not start, the first step is to check that the electrical system is working and then that the plug is correctly inserted.

Once this is verified, if the hood does not start, the problem could be related to the control buttons or even to the electronic board itself. In this case, it will be necessary to replace the defective component.

If the hood starts but does not suck, the cause could be the presence of dirty filters or even engine failure. In the first case, do a good cleaning. In the second, you will be forced to replace the piece.
