Buyer Guide to Choose the Best Telescopes
Numerous Types
Finding your way through the jungle of the models of telescopes available is not easy because there are all types, both in structure and size. In broad terms, we can identify three families: refractors, reflectors (or Newtonians) and reflex reflectors, each with its pros and cons.
Without going too far into the technical aspects, we can identify the refracting models such as those consisting of a long and relatively thin tube in which one end mounts the front lens.
Which is responsible for collecting the light emitted by the stars and is closed on the other end. The fact that this telescope is sealed prevents air from entering it and ruining the quality of vision. The refractors that mount high-quality optics can return bright and well-contrasted images.
The reflector models consist of a tube open at one end and which on the other (closed) mounts a large mirror supported by another secondary and flat surface.
The presence of the two glasses allows you to view the image in the eyepiece (the small binoculars from which it is observed) precisely as it appears in the sky and not reversed as in the case of refractors.
This type of telescope is the most versatile one, which is suitable for amateur use both in terms of ease of use and by comparing prices compared to other types.
The counter is represented by the opening of the tube, which allows the dust to enter and deposit on the optics which it is necessary to realign from time to time.
The catadioptric models are of medium-high level and are typically designed to be combined with photographic instruments and are often also equipped with an automatic mechanism that facilitates exploration of the sky.
Which One to Choose?
Making a choice is not easy; therefore, even if the price undoubtedly represents a good discriminant, given that the most advanced and professional telescopes cost figures, not within everyone’s reach.
Let’s say that you must understand in what conditions you will put yourself to observe the sky and above all what type of stars you are interested in discovering (or what the place where you live allows you to admire).
If your interest is mainly in the planets and the moon, it is essential to opt for a tool that ensures bright, highly contrasted images with a reasonable degree of resolution. In this case, the best choice, in our opinion, is that of a good refractor.
If, on the other hand, you would like to admire objects such as galaxies and nebulae, which emit a weaker light, it is advisable to opt for an instrument capable of collecting as much light as possible, therefore a reflector.
The Importance of Light
Many telescopes among those proposed by the best brands highlight among their strengths that of offering a high magnification capacity. In principle, it is a mirror for larks because the real power of a device of this type is its diameter.
The essential aspect of a telescope is its ability to collect as much light as possible, and the greater their aperture, the greater the amount of light that they will channel towards your eye. A 60mm model, for example, will always offer lower viewing quality than a 100mm model even if it has a higher magnification capacity.
Furthermore, as the diameter increases, the telescopes also boast a higher resolution, that is, the ability to show a clear image that allows, for example, to distinguish two very close objects.
Celestron: Also Chosen by Nasa
The company of American origin Celestron, now owned by the Chinese Synta Technology Corporation, which had been its main supplier of components for 15 years, was founded in the 1950s and, from its origins, has dedicated itself exclusively to construction microscopes, binoculars, telescopes and related accessories.
It was one of the first companies in this production sector to equip their telescopes with an aspherical lens to eliminate spherical aberration and drastically reduce other optical aberrations.
The telescopes produced by Celestron are not limited only to models dedicated to beginners and amateurs, but also include series such as CGEM, CGX and derivatives.
Highly appreciated for their high performance, especially by professionals in the sector; as evidence of this mention the Celestron C5 XLT Spotter telescope, chosen even by NASA to equip numerous missions of the Space Shuttle.
Newtonian Reflector with An Equatorial Mount
In the Celestron catalogue, the Astromaster 130 EQ telescope is indicated as a short-tube Newton reflector instrument, mounted on an equatorial mount placed on a solid tripod made of stainless steel.
Being a Newtonian model, it has the advantage of being compact and having decidedly reduced dimensions and weight, only 89 x 48.5 x 28 centimetres and 16.8 kilograms, specifications that make it quite easy to transport and with a small footprint, especially dismantled in the main elements that compose it.
The equatorial mount, on the other hand, makes it much easier to follow the trajectory of the celestial body observed, since, in this type of horse, one of the rotation axes can be inclined according to the latitude from which the observations are made; the frame is also designed to be motorized in right ascension.
High-Level Optics
The Astromaster 130 EQ has a diameter of 130 millimetres and a focal length of 650 millimetres, with an f / 5 ratio, just enough to clearly and observe the lunar surface and its craters, Venus and its phases, the chiaroscuro of the body of Mars, the satellites and atmospheric bands of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn.
Furthermore, its optics can separate the components of many double stars, making them visible and, if weather conditions permit, to observe the star clusters and nebulae closest to the solar system.
According to buyers, the Astromaster 130 EQ, despite being an economical range telescope designed primarily for students and beginners, has much better high-level optics than similar telescopes produced by other brands.
