Taking photos or shooting underwater videos is the only way to show those who do not have the opportunity to admire the underwater world firsthand, what we observe when we are underwater.

The diffusion of diving courses, summer, and winter, has been a great impetus for the market of underwater digital cameras, which, it should be remembered, are designed to deal with stressful situations even in subaerial conditions.

In addition to being waterproof, they resist shocks, accidental falls, intense cold, and the most insidious dust. For this reason In the comparison that follows, we show you what we believe are the best underwater cameras. Here we will be listing the top 14 best underwater cameras

Everything You Need to Know about Best Underwater Cameras

Although the choice of the best compact underwater camera is limited to a few models, it is worth knowing about these characteristic features, in addition to the pros and cons, compare prices and make your purchase.

We deliberately dealt in the comparison work that follows only cameras intended in the strict sense, leaving out the now popular action cameras.

For a matter of form (form factor), therefore of ergonomics and optical potential, we prefer that underwater cameras continue to represent a category of product in its own right.

The action cameras are, for example, without zoom and are designed more to be fixed to the helmet, surfboard, motorbike, or bicycle, using dedicated accessories, than for use by hand. Having made this critical distinction, you need to know what you need before asking yourself which underwater camera to buy.

If, for example, you have to make a gift to your children, on the occasion of their first communion, or because they have fun in the pool or on the beach during the summer holidays, our advice is not to spend too much money and buy.

If not the most economical, a machine with a medium-low price. If instead the ” rugged cameras ” are for you and you want to make underwater shots worthy of the best enlargement on paper, the matter changes.

Also remember that current underwater cameras, except for the cheaper models, have integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules that allow you to establish a continuous connection with your smartphone for remote control and the direct and wireless transfer of photos from the same cameras to the phone.

Forget the proposed models at low prices and turn your attention to higher performance machines. With these premises, follow our purchase advice, and you will know how to choose a good underwater camera.

What Is an Ip Certification?

What does this set of alphanumeric characters mean? This is the international protection mark or the International Protection Rating, which offers you precise information, i.e., derived in the laboratory, of how resistant a given camera is to dust and water.

These are values obtained precisely in the laboratory, subjecting the cameras to rigorous but controlled tests, so they must be interpreted with the right intelligence.

The two digits following the abbreviation IP indicate the impermeability, respectively, to solid bodies (dust and small debris) and that to liquids (mainly water).

The former can take values between 0 and 6; the second values between 0 and 9. The higher the value, the higher the resistance that the device – in our case, the underwater digital camera – opposes the entry of dust and water.

If you are interested in a digital underwater camera and more generally in an outdoor machine, you will undoubtedly come across abbreviations of the type IPX8, IP6X, IP68, and so on.

Without going into the merits of the various values, we invite you to look at the technical data sheets that accompany each model in this article.

All cameras, except for the Easypix W1024, have an IP certification of 68 (i.e., IP68). It is therefore clear that for all the models treated, the resistance to solid and liquid intrusion is almost maximum.

More in detail: the IP6X code certifies total protection from dust; the abbreviation IPX8 certifies the impermeability towards the water by immersing the camera beyond a meter of depth.

The international standard states that for an IPX8 underwater camera, “entering the water with certain conditions (specified by the manufacturer) does not cause any damage: there can be hermetic sealing or, simply, the water that enters does not damage the device.”

Protection level 9 does not apply to cameras as it expresses the degree of protection against high pressure and high-temperature water jets, tests to which cameras should never be called for every day and non-special use. As for drop and impact resistance, one of the most used reference standards is the Mil-Std 810F 516.5: Shock. To derive the strength of each model, the manufacturers drop the cameras onto 5 cm thick plywood panels.

Creative Effects, Hdr, Time-Lapse and Panorama Function

A few years ago, we would have flown over the subject. Today, given the existence of social networks that allow us to communicate through images ( Facebook and Instagram above all), special effects and creative filters have acquired fundamental importance.

Digital camera manufacturers know this and put them at your disposal. You can partially apply them during shooting, in part to images already acquired.

Finally, the possibility of transferring the shots to the smartphone or tablet, thanks to the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity of the underwater cameras treated here, will allow you to share real works of art. All the cameras operated by us include the right amount of special effects and filters that sometimes improve the shots; other times, they tend to transform them completely, also for hilarious results.

Other functions to consider for a rugged camera to be considered complete are HDR, Time-Lapse, and Panorama function. The good news is that the new cameras have even more unique features.

Defined in Anglo-Saxon “High Dynamic Range,” HDR images are obtained by superimposing two or more shots of the same subject obtained with different exposures and suitably calibrated.

The characteristic of HDR images is that of restoring a level of detail close to that perceived by the human eye, reproducing more information in heavily shaded areas. In the so-called “high lights,” that is, in the most illuminated ones.

If once it was up to the photographer to correctly overlay images with third-party software, today it is the same cameras that deal with them.

Simply select the intensity of the HDR you want to obtain, keep the shutter button pressed and wait for an HDR image to be saved on the memory card.

We talk to you about this function because we believe that an underwater camera, more specifically one designed for the outdoors, should include it. Think of a sunset in the high mountains or on the sea: with HDR, you will have more shades of color (from red to blue) and a more considerable amount of detail.

Always automatically, the recent cameras allow creating Time-Lapse videos. These are videos obtained by combining several photographs captured at predetermined time intervals.

Think of a blooming flower, the setting sun, the clouds moving in the sky. These are situations that those who live or practice outdoor sports continuously face.

You can choose the right period in the camera menu and let it do it all by itself. It is essential, however, that it is secured to a tripod so that the images (it could even be hundreds) are taken from the same point of view. You can also make time-lapses with a dynamic point of view, that is, in motion (they are generally called “hyper-lapse”), but to do this, you need to have specific equipment.

Conclusion

Even if it is beyond the scope of the article you are reading, it is advisable to talk about their existence to offer you complete information.

Staying on the subject of natural landscapes and automated creations, pay attention to the panorama function thanks to which the images will have a horizontal and vertical development that covers angles of 180 ° or 360 °.

The most advanced cameras allow you to easily create panoramas by holding down the shutter button and rotating the body (therefore the camera) to the desired angle.

Others, the cheaper ones, show on display some useful guidelines to correctly compose the shots step by step. These will then be merged – the technique is called “stitching” – to the computer later, using third-party software.
