What to Look for Before Buying Best Backlit Keyboards?
Format: indicates the number of keys of a mechanical keyboard. It can be Full, i.e. with 104 keys, tenkeyless (TKL), or with 87 keys (the numeric keypad is missing), 75% (the arrow keys and shortcuts are attached to the letters) and the 60% and 40%, very rarer to find in gaming.
Over the years, the number of models and versions available has increased dramatically. Many manufacturers have also presented their proprietary switches such as Logitech.
Razer and more recently Roccat, and understanding which one is more suitable for their use, compared to the alternatives that have been around for years (Cherry MX, Gateron, Khail), can be very complicated, especially for those who approach this world for the first time.
The choice between the various formats is subjective, but TKL keyboards tend to be players’ favourites: they take up less space on the desk, allowing you to take more comfortable positions and have more space to move the mouse.
Layout: indicates the arrangement of characters to suit a specific language. The keyboards available on our market have three different plans.
Italian (with L key and with all the accented letters), ANSI-US (with the small and full enter key and extensive left Shift key) and ISO-UK, which provides the enter key to L. Still, instead of accented letters there are several characters. Again, the choice between one layout and another is subjective.
Keycaps
The keycaps are nothing but the keys (also key covers). Most keyboards include ABS keycaps, a type of plastic that guarantees excellent rigidity and resilience, but which over the years tends to wear and become shiny.
It is the cheapest choice, although the quality of the ABS varies between the more affordable and higher-end keyboards, thanks to the addition of different additives that can improve its performance.
Other sufficiently widespread keycaps are those in POM, which are more resistant but also more expensive. Finally, there are those in PBT, the best choice for resistance, but very expensive and rare to find as standard on a keyboard, at least if we consider the gaming field.
Switch
They are nothing but the mechanisms positioned under each key. The switches are produced by various companies such as Cherry, Khail, Gateron, Outemu, but also by some keyboard manufacturers such as Logitech, Razer and Roccat. Each manufacturer has different types of switches in the price list.
For example, the Cherry MX is available in seven variants, all different from each other, as well as the others mentioned.
Although some switches are more suitable than others for the game (for example the Red switches compared to the Black ones), personal preferences inevitably play a fundamental role. The advice is to try – if possible – the switches before buying a keyboard.
Differences with A Gaming Keyboard
Although many connect the backlit keyboard to gaming keyboards, in reality, they are two different devices. Of course, the vast majority of gaming keyboards are backlit with RGB LEDs, but traditional, mostly monochromatic backlit keyboards exist, designed for work or home.
Although the backlit gaming keyboard allows you to focus on what is happening on the screen and find the keys faster, for a manual to be considered gaming it must include several additional features in addition to the simple backlight. Also, read about the best gaming mouse.
To choose the best-backlit keyboard for your needs, you need to take into consideration a series of rather simple factors, to buy the most suitable model for your use without going to spend quite essential figures.
Type of Use
Before choosing your backlit keyboard, it is essential to have a clear understanding of the type of use that will be made of it. If you were to use it in the office or at home, for example, you might be advised to purchase an inexpensive backlit keyboard, or equipped with white (monochrome) LEDs.
Conversely, to play video games, a backlit gaming keyboard may be required which, in addition to the coloured illumination of the keys, includes specific design and functionality for this type of use. In this case, the expenditure may be higher than that of a backlit keyboard from home or office.
With Cable or Wireless
Also, in this case, it is essential the type of use that will be made of the keyboard. On the market, there are backlit keyboards that connect to the computer via a USB cable, or wireless models.
The latter is much more comfortable as regards cable management and the general aesthetic aspect, thanks to the total absence of wires. On the other hand, however, wireless backlit keyboards require a higher frequency for changing batteries or recharging them.
If, on the other hand, you want to purchase a backlit gaming keyboard, then the choice should be forcibly addressed to a model with the cable: in this way not only will the input lag be lower, but you will not risk finding yourself with the batteries discharged in the middle of an exciting game.
Type of Lighting
You can buy a monochromatic backlit keyboard, or a model equipped with RGB LEDs. Regardless of the colour.
It is essential to make sure that in the chosen model it is possible to adjust the intensity of the lighting of the keys, to avoid finding yourself in dark or poorly lit environments, with too bright keys that can cause headaches.
