If you are looking for a laptop, the Lenovo laptops are undoubtedly an excellent choice. It is one of the most prolific manufacturers in the category, with their own notebooks that are sold in large numbers because of their versatility and their wide availability even in large electronics retail chains. In the Lenovo line-up, there are several products from various families, each with its own essential characteristics.
To choose a company notebook, you still need to know some definitions of the basic components that you can find inside a traditional laptop. The technical characteristics of the various products establish their strengths and various weaknesses, and it is precisely for this reason that you need to know what the individual components are for and what advantages they offer before understanding which model is best suited to your personal needs.
Lenovo offers Chromebooks and laptops with Windows 10, some designed for maximum portability and office work, others – such as the Legion Y series – specifically for video games. Before establishing which model to buy, you must not only check its technical characteristics but also decide which budget to allocate to your purchase and understand which type of laptop is the most suitable for your personal needs. But no more talk and let’s move on to the actual buying guide.
In this guide, I will show you the best Lenovo laptops and parameters to evaluate before purchasing a new laptop to determine which is actually the best notebook that can meet specific needs and at the same time have an excellent quality/price ratio.

Choosing the Best Lenovo Laptops Buying Guide
Choosing a Lenovo laptop is like any other laptop. First, you have to establish what type of computer you need and what its intended use will be (multimedia, office, gaming), then you must identify a maximum spending threshold beyond which you do not intend to go. Once these two premises are made, you can choose the laptop based on its integrated technical characteristics. Here are the essential ones you absolutely need to know.
Notebook Formats
There are different types of formats that define not only the size and weight of each product but also the way in which it can be used. The choice of the so-called “form factor” has priority over the rest of the components, since it affects the compatibility of some of them. In other words, if you are looking for the best performing hardware, you will hardly find it on an ultrabook.
Notebook or Laptop
They are characterized by the clamshell closure and are the most common. They can be both very cheap and very powerful. Gaming notebooks usually use this form factor.
Ultrabook
They are also laptops with a shell closure, but they are extremely compact and have a reduced thickness. They generally use low voltage processors to reduce heat loss inside the body.
2 in 1 or Convertible
The 2-in-1 use two separate modules, one that contains the display and all the hardware necessary for the operation and the other the keyboard and – sometimes – even some additional ports. The convertibles, on the other hand, are notebooks with special hinges that allow you to turn the display 360 °. Thanks to this peculiarity they can be used in different modes, usually tablets and traditional notebooks, while some models also support curtain or stand modes. Both 2-in-1 and convertibles can sometimes support a capacitive pen, often taking advantage of proprietary technologies not compatible with other models.
Screen Size
Once you have chosen the format, you can decide what the diagonal of the integrated display will be, and it is maximum supported resolution. 10 to 12-inch lenovo laptops are usually the most compact and therefore the most easily portable. They are often 2-in-1 or convertible with no exaggerated computational power. Those from 13 to 14 inches represent a fair compromise between portability and performance: they are not very light, but not even heavy, and can integrate the same hardware as the 15-inch models. The latter is instead the “norm”, i.e. the most popular notebooks often use this diagonal: they are not extremely compact, but neither bulky and can also integrate high-level hardware.
Lenovo laptops larger than 15 inches, 17 and more inches, are usually quite bulky and are called desktop replacements, precisely because they can replace a real desktop. As a rule, but not always, they are also the most powerful that you can find on the market.
Lenovo notebooks can support the most disparate resolutions, starting from simple HD (1280 × 720 or 1366 × 768 pixels), up to 4K Ultra HD (3840 × 2160 pixels). There is no shortage of models with intermediate resolutions, among which the most popular standards are Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels) and 2K (2560 × 1440 pixels). The displays can also be touch-screens, i.e. sensitive to touch with the fingers. This functionality is almost always guaranteed on convertibles.
Processor (CPU)
The processor, also called CPU, is the main computing unit of the laptop and is useful for processing all the tasks to be performed. Its power is measured in GHz and, usually, a CPU is equipped with multiple cores, or separate physical calculation units that help in “parallelizing” the tasks to be performed. The processors can be produced by Intel and AMD: the most popular are the Intel Core i3 and Core i5, of medium-low and medium range, while in this market segment you can also find the AMD A series. On the cheaper systems they can integrate Intel Atom processors, which consume very little, and Celeron or Pentium, the entry-level of Intel.
Video Card (gpu)
All computers have a GPU or a video card, but this can be either integrated into the CPU package (and therefore less powerful), or dedicated (with variable power, but usually more powerful than the integrated ones). If you like playing 3D video games, I absolutely recommend you buy a computer with a dedicated GPU. There are many models on the market, developed mainly by Nvidia and AMD.
Memoirs
The memories of a Lenovo laptops are mainly divided into two categories: RAM is the memory used by apps and services running on the operating system. The greater the amount of RAM, the greater the computer’s ability to process more information at the same time and be more responsive under any circumstances. The storage memory is instead that of “archiving”, and allows you to save files, documents, applications, games, and even the operating system in a stable manner. Unlike RAM, storage is not cleared when the machine is restarted. To deal with storage, you can find mechanical hard disks, not very fast but very reliable; SSD on SATA or PCIe platforms, silent and very fast, especially PCIe ones; and finally, eMMC, solid state memories with performance halfway between hard drives and SSDs.
Battery
The battery is also a fundamental component of a laptop since it is the one that allows you to use it even if it is not connected to the electric current. Its capacity is classified in milliampere hours (mAh) and can be produced with a variable number of cells. The higher the number, the greater the autonomy of the laptop, even if its duration also depends on many other variables, such as how to use it, the brightness of the display, the complexity of the operations carried out. Battery specifications can also be expressed in Wh and V.
Connectivity
Check for ports and connectivity solutions, so they are compatible with your needs. For example, check the number of USB ports, which can be type A (standard format) and type C (small size with reversible connector). There is the second generation USB 3.1 ports that can transfer at 1250 MB / s, the first generation USB 3.1 (or USB 3.0) that stop at 625 MB / s and the USB 2.0 that does not exceed 60 MB / s.
Other ports are also important, such as Ethernet (Fast 100 Mbps or Gigabit 1000 Mbps) for wired connection to a network, HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI or VGA ports for connecting external monitors.
Connectivity does not only mean cables, but there is also wireless: the most common standards present on lenovo laptops are the inevitable Wi-Fi (802.11n the fastest ac, even dual band if the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies are supported), and Bluetooth. On some models of Lenovo notebooks, you can also find support for the cellular network with connection up to 4G LTE.
Other Characteristics
Lenovo laptops can have an optical drive for reading DVDs or Bluray, a card reader for using external memory cards, and can use different materials. The most popular are polycarbonate for the cheaper products, or different metal alloys more or less sought after for the more expensive products.
Operating System
On Lenovo laptops, you will almost always find the Windows 10 operating system, with very few exceptions. The company does not naturally produce devices with macOS since this operating system is used exclusively by Apple, while some very inexpensive models natively support Chrome OS, a Google operating system designed for laptops and with which some of the Android apps can be used.
Types of Lenovo Notebook
Lenovo notebooks differ in several product families, where each occupies a more or less large market niche. The main families are listed below.
Lenovo Ideapad – the computers in this family boast very different characteristics. The Ideapad Miix are inexpensive tablets, while the Ideapad 300 and 500 are medium-low-end notebooks, which combine a traditional and without preciousness design, with hardware usually suitable for different types of tasks.
Lenovo Legion – these notebooks are very powerful and are intended for a demanding gamer audience.
Lenovo ThinkPad – these notebooks are primarily aimed at the business or productivity environment. They are divided into several sub-families, such as Yoga (ultrabook), Thinkpad P (workstation), Thinkpad X (thin and light).
Lenovo Yoga – the Yoga series represents the company’s 2-in-1 notebook line-up. Again, as the figure increases, there is an increase in price and performance.
