Everything You Need to Know AboutΒ Carpal Tunnel Brace
What Is a Wristband?
The cuff or orthosis is a usually elastic band that we use to limit the movements of the wrist. Usually they are used in rehabilitation processes, but they are also adopted in sport. The warm, block the joint and prevent any trauma, such as sprains and dislocations.
Who Invented the Wrist Strap?
The British ping pong and tennis player, Fred Perry (1909-1995). Famous for his polo shirts and, only later, for tennis tournaments, he had a father who worked cotton.
After achieving notoriety, Perry set up a textile business with an Australian entrepreneur and produced what was the first wristband on the market in 1952. His goal: to wipe sweat from his forehead.
What Pathologies Require the Use of A Wrist Band?
When your wrist hurts, you do not always have to consult a doctor, but if the pain persists over time, it is likely that you have suffered an injury. Usually, and if we talk about minor trauma, analgesics and the use of a wristband are enough to heal you.
Sometimes, however, the pain is due to a pathology, as we can see from the following list:
- Injuries, Sprains and Fractures. They are usually caused by falling over the hand and sometimes they may not be seen immediately on the X-ray. An example of these pathologies is the fracture of the scaphoid, a wrist bone near the thumb.
- Injury Caused by Prolonged Exertion. Like when you play an instrument or perform repetitive throws. An example is the syndrome of “De Quervain”, which causes pain in the base of the thumb.
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. It is caused by the crushing of the nerves near the carpal tunnel, located at the base of the palm, in the wrist area. It is a very frequent lesion, like other lesions of nervous origin.
- Synovial Cyst or Ganglia Cyst. They are usually located in the back of the wrist and are very painful.
- Arthritis. Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are included. The first is caused by the immune system and the second by bone deterioration.
What Activities Require the Use of A Wristband?
Sometimes even if you are a sedentary person, the activities you carry out may require the use of a wristband. Other times obesity and pregnancy increase the risk of suffering from carpal tunnel. In addition, there are activities that increase the risk of incurring wrist pain, such as the following:
Repetitive movements. As happens when you use your hands for work, whether you are building a masonry or you are cutting your hair in a hair salon.
Sports . Especially if they often require wrist movement like tennis, bowling and gymnastics.
Do I Need to Know the Size of My Wrist to Buy a Cuff?
Usually, if you are looking for a wristband for sports or one for prevention, you will not need to know the size of your wrist. These items are usually universal and have a velcro closure so that they can be adjusted according to the size of the wrist.
If, on the other hand, you need other types of wristbands, we advise you to measure the circumference of your wrist since this will determine the size of the wristband you will have to buy.
How Many Types of Sports Wristbands Are There and What Fabrics Are They Made Of?
Sports wristbands are usually made of cotton and / or neoprene with Velcro closure, although in reality they can be made of other fabrics. They are not always used correctly, as we will see later, and their varieties are many.
- To Absorb Sweat They used to be cotton, they are finer and their goal is to absorb sweat. They are used in exercises that require great freedom of movement of the wrist such as, for example, tennis or paddle.
- Neoprene It is a material widely used today thanks to its resistance to cold, heat and humidity. Generally, they are more expensive, but also of higher quality. They offer greater support in sports activities such as weight lifting or bench presses. Their closure is usually in velcro.
- Polyester It is a synthetic fiber which is characterized by its breathability and absorbency. Polyester is a very versatile material and, moreover, it does not widen or shrink. In the sports field, in fact, this type of cuff is used mainly for its reduced elasticity.
Wide or “adjustable” cuffs They protect part of the forearm, the wrist and generally the whole hand. They are especially used in basketball. - Ballasted or Weighted Wristbands Their goal is to increase the load and increase sports performance. They are frequently used in CrossFit, gymnastics and athletics.
- Cuffs with Pocket As the name suggests, they include a small pocket for storing keys, for example. The pocket is often also found in the wrists with weights.
What Is the Correct Use of The Wristband?
The cuffs must be used correctly otherwise they could cause injury. In many cases, their use is not necessary, but if you decide to use them you have to keep in mind some general rules. Below, we will make a list with tips on how to use them in the most appropriate way while exercising:
Do not warm up while wearing the wristbands. They are necessary for exercises that do not reach 60% of your one-repetition maximum.
Use them during training OR when you are reaching your maximum load. ‘
If you resort to them you will find that they limit the force load of the wrist extensors.
Use the correct model of wristband. As we have already said, you should resort to the neoprene models with Velcro closure for all those sports that require the use of force. If you play sports involving the use of a racket, opt for a thinner model so that you can move your wrist freely.
Do not place them lower than normal. You have to cover the wrist joint or it won’t provide support for your goals.
The cuffs will not make you more flexible. This type of device has the main purpose of preventing injuries and absorbing sweat. Do not use it for greater flexibility as it may cause problems in the long run.
Purchase Criteria
As you have already understood, each cuff has its own particularities. If you like tennis you will not be able to buy the same wristbands that a weight lifting fan uses. Before buying an article of this type, we advise you to review those criteria that will help you find the cuff that best suits your needs:
- Cut It
- Activity Practiced
- Quality of The Material
- Physical Condition
- Comments and Reviews
Cut It
It is important that you pay attention to this aspect. Generally, the wristbands are one size, but not always. Sometimes, as you have seen in our product ranking, they can be found in different sizes: S, M, L and XL.
Others must be chosen according to the measurement in cm of the circumference of the wrist. Don’t forget this criterion if you don’t want to return the article.
Activity Practiced
We have already seen that two different types of wristbands are needed if we play tennis or if we practice lifting weights. Depending on your favorite sporting activity, you will have to choose the most suitable wristband.
If you need to do strength training, opt for a wristband that protects you from possible injuries. Don’t mess with your health!
Quality of The Material
An aspect of great importance is the quality of the materials or fabrics used for the wrist. Materials such as neoprene and polyester are the most resistant, but they are also the most expensive. We always recommend that you choose quality products, even if they cost more. You will not regret it.
Physical Condition
There are specific wristbands for specific problems. If you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, opt for an article suitable for this condition. It is better to have an immobilized wrist rather than aggravate your condition.
Remember that there are devices to relieve pain or to protect you from injuries such as sprains and other trauma.
Comments and Reviews
Do not underestimate the opinions and reviews of those who already use the product. Sometimes, they include technical aspects that you will hardly find on the internet.
The reviews, in the form of stars, give you an idea of ββthe quality-price ratio of the product and its durability. Compare the information, it will always be useful to you.
