What Is a Thermos and What Is It For?

A thermos is an insulating container for storing liquids, which allows to significantly increase the time during which the temperature of its contents remains hot, or cold, depending on the liquid itself.

It is used in various and different situations, such as during travel and excursions, but also to go to the office or university.

The thermos has a structure which, thanks to a double-wall, isolates the inside of the container from the external environment.

Generally, the internal part is made of stainless steel, a material that has proven to be perfect for this kind of articles as it does not alter the flavour of the content, it is not scratched, and it is straightforward to clean.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of A Coffee Thermos?

Thanks to its characteristics, the thermos has become the best ally of those who need to bring their favourite drink, coffee, which allows them to keep their concentration high and have a productive day.

However, like any object, thermos also has some drawbacks. Read on and find out the pros and cons of this product.

Advantages

  • It Maintains the Ideal Temperature for Longer.
  • It helps keep you hydrated throughout the day.
  • You can take it anywhere.
  • Allows you to carry a significant amount of drink with you.
  • There is an excellent variety of designs.
  • Very easy to use.
  • It saves us money.

Disadvantages

  • In Some Cases, It Is Difficult to Wash.
  • It tends to spoil over time.
  • If it is not closed correctly, it risks spilling the contents.

How does the coffee thermos keep the temperature of the drink it contains?

This type of container works with a technology that maintains the content at its ideal temperature through vacuum insulation.

The double-wall which the thermos has two layers without air between them: in this way, it prevents the ambient temperature from changing that of the liquid inside the thermos.

The material with which the thermos is made, their thickness and the depth of the walls contribute to the maintenance of heat or cold. Today, stainless steel is the most widely used to produce these items, as it has been shown to maintain temperature better than plastic.

How Long Does a Coffee Thermos Keep the Temperature?

From four to eighteen hours, depending on the model of thermos you use, it is the period in which your coffee, juice or water will be stored at the optimal temperature. Usually, the thermos is used more for hot drinks than for cold ones, because the heat in these containers is kept longer than the cold.

How Do Coffee Thermos Guarantee Tightness?

For a thermos to maintain the ideal temperature, it must be airtight. The less external cold and heat enter the container, the better its contents will be preserved.

Depending on the type of thermos and the various brands and models, there are three different ways of isolating the liquid inside it. Here are summarized:

  • Vacuum Insulation. It is the method that best preserves the temperature. This type of insulation consists of a double metal layer between the two walls; this coating retains the internal temperature and heat and prevents the external temperature from passing inside the container.
  • Air Insulation. The cheapest, it is mainly used for thematic cups and glasses. Between the two walls, there is a quantity of air (hence the name) which allows the container to isolate the liquid it contains. If you want to keep the heat for a long time, this is not the best option, but it works well for short journeys.
  • Insulating Foam. This type of insulation involves inserting a layer of foam between the two walls of the thermos. Consequently, the internal temperature will be maintained longer, and the cold from the outside will not be able to penetrate the first wall of the container. This system allows you to keep the drink warm for about three hours.

What Is the Best Material for A Coffee Thermos?

The two most common materials with which thermos are produced are plastic and stainless steel, although there are models in glass or ceramic.

According to experts, however, the most suitable is stainless steel, which maintains heat for longer, is unbreakable and does not transmit smells or flavours to the liquid it contains.

Plastic thermos is generally less expensive, but keep the temperature for less time, are less resistant and harmful to the environment. The ceramic ones, on the other hand, are very delicate and barely retain heat, therefore not recommended. That’s why stainless steel remains the consumer favourite.

Purchase Criteria

In addition to all the information that we talked about in this article, there are other essential aspects not to be taken for granted when you are about to buy a coffee thermos.

These criteria will help you choose the best product for your needs, to always carry your favourite drink with you, in the best possible way. We have selected five:

  • Isolation
  • Materials and resistance
  • Capacity
  • Design
  • Cleaning

Isolation

The most important thing to consider, when buying a thermos, is its level of tightness. From this depends the time during which the container will keep the temperature of its contents intact, one of the main functions of the product. It is therefore essential that, before buying one, you check its ability to isolate the content.

This aspect marks the difference between low-range and higher-level thermos. Although cheaper thermos may be suitable to use for short periods, some manage to keep the temperature for only two hours.

Fortunately, thanks to the great offer on the market, there are very valid and performing ones at a high price.

Materials and Resistance

This aspect is directly linked to the previous one: the thermos manufacturing process determines the level of tightness.

The best are in double-walled stainless steel, but there are also in plastic and ceramic. Therefore, knowing the material with which they are made before buying them is essential.

Furthermore, depending on the material, the coffee thermos will be more or less resistant. In addition to not being very insulating, plastic must be replaced more frequently than steel.

Ceramics and glass are very fragile and not sufficiently resistant for an object such as the thermos, which is moved and transported from one part to the other.

Capacity

How much coffee will I drink? Where do I want to use the thermos and which type of drink? These are some of the questions that should be asked before buying. There is a thermos of various sizes and capacities on the market so that the choice could be complicated.

But if we have clear answers to these questions, we will find what is right for us very quickly. If you need a thermos to take coffee with you to the office, you will need a large enough one. If, on the other hand, you plan to drink coffee on the way to work, a smaller one will suffice.

Design

Size and tightness are the essential characteristics, but there are others to consider to buy the best product that ensures you a perfect coffee. These containers can be even more useful if they are made of non-slip material.

Also, check if they have some kind of handle (a handle or a strap) because it will prove to be a very advantageous accessory.

You can also choose among various styles and colours what you like, but this is the most natural part: with all the options available on the market, it will be almost impossible not to find one that is to your liking.

Cleaning

As we explained throughout the article, keeping the coffee thermos clean is essential. However, not all containers are easy to clean, so before buying one, make sure you can wash it and even put it in the dishwasher. You could also buy a brush that facilitates the process.
