Buying Guide to Select the Best Hiking Bags
After this brief introduction into the world of mountain backpacks, the time has come to move on to the practical part of this guide, the one that will allow us to choose the best trekking backpack for our needs.
Below we will then go into detail all the features that we will have to take into consideration when choosing and ensure that the type, capacity, dimensions, materials, internal and external frame.
Types
To choose the backpack that best suits your needs, the first aspect to consider is the type of trekking backpack we need.
No backpack can be suitable for any situation, so we recommend having at least two bags (one smaller 30/50 liters and one larger 70/90 liters).
By convention we can distinguish a series of types about the volume, and therefore the capacity, of the backpack and the outdoor activities we want to do:
- Trekking Backpacks from 10 to 30 Liters: suitable for short excursions ( hiking backpacks ) for climbing, running, and cycling.
- Trekking Backpacks from 30 to 40 Liters: congenial for day trips, long walks, or a weekend trip without too many things to carry.
- Trekking Backpacks from 40 to 60 Liters: perfect for mountaineering, a two / three-day excursion, for a four / five-day trip or short camping;
- Trekking Backpacks from 60 to 90 Liters: for demanding trekking, excursions, camping, and long-term trips.
Dimensions
Another aspect to take into consideration are certainly the dimensions concerning the volume and capacity of which we have already spoken in the previous paragraph, but also the width and height of the trekking backpack.
These two measures will increase with increasing capacity: a 10/12 liter backpack will be much lower and narrower than a 100 liter one.
Considering that the width of the backpack affects the walking comfort (especially on uneven terrain), to avoid problems in maintaining balance or balancing the pace, it is recommended to prefer a taller and less wide backpack.
Also, the weight of the “empty” trekking backpack plays a vital role in the choice: having a light backpack is, in fact, fundamental for a perfect excursion and starting with a lower base weight (to which will then be added the equipment to trekking.
A few changes, food supplies, and possibly even a sleeping bag and mattress) is already a good start for your trip. An unwritten but very wise rule says that the backpack, including equipment, must be one-tenth of its weight (or in any case, fully loaded, not exceeding 20%).
For this reason, it is good that the empty backpack does not exceed the weight of a kilo and a half.
Materials
After the shape, it is of fundamental importance to also take into consideration the structure of the trekking backpack. For this reason, the materials the backpack is made of must also influence our choice.
Our ideal trekking backpack is mainly used in rough paths, mountains, countryside, or woods. In different weather conditions, it must be made of highly impact-resistant (to avoid tearing and tearing) and waterproof materials, therefore, rainproof.
However, this may not completely protect your backpack from possible water infiltration (which could enter from the zippers or filter through the seams). Therefore it is advisable also to buy a waterproof fabric bag cover that acts as a rain cover at the moment of need.
Internal Frame
Depending on the activity we are going to carry out, we may or may not favor a backpack with an internal frame, especially useful when you have to carry heavy and oversized loads.
The frames with curved rods that are found inside this type of backpack are generally in aluminum or plastic. They have the main function of helping the redistribution of weight in the areas where our body is more able to bear it ( the hip area, for example).
The internal frames, narrower and more adherent than the external ones, are therefore ideal for all dynamic activities that require a low center of gravity and complete mobility of the arms (such as climbing or cross-country skiing). For this reason, it is essential to fill them in the right way.
To help you, here are a series of tips on how to load a backpack with an internal frame correctly: the sleeping bag, well packed, must be inserted first into the main pocket transversely to the bottom of the backpack.
Remember that heavier objects (tent, cooking accessories, hiking shoes, etc …) always go to the bottom from the side closest to the back; windbreaker and rain gear goes along the sides while the other clothes are placed in a separate bag and then placed in the backpack at the end.
The objects that you will have to use during the activity (food, water bottle or water bottle, maps, protective creams, etc …) must be inserted in the external pockets or the upper cover so that they are easily at hand.
Outer Frame
If, on the other hand, the loads that we will have to carry are even heavier, we could opt for a backpack with an external frame with the bag tucked in a surface structure that makes the load positioned further away from the back.
Consequently, these trekking backpacks have a higher center of gravity than those with an internal frame and therefore allow the weight to be transferred on the hips and assume a more upright posture while walking.
The airflow created between the backpack and the back also allows us to increase perspiration. For these reasons, this type is ideal for walking on mountain paths and trekking routes.
Another advantage of these backpacks is undoubtedly the presence of numerous very capacious and easily accessible pockets. Still, to make the best use of them also in this case, they must be filled with criteria.
To help you, therefore, here are a series of tips on how to load a backpack with an external frame correctly: typically sleeping bag and padded mattress must be tied to the structure under the bag (being outside it is therefore recommended to keep them in a waterproof bag).
Inside the backpack, instead, the heavier tools will be positioned at the top and, possibly, from the part closest to the spine; finally, in the side pockets, all those objects that we may need during the activity must be inserted.
Transpiration
Another essential aspect to take into consideration when we go to choose the trekking backpack that best suits our needs is undoubtedly the level of perspiration and hydration that mainly affects the back of our tool.
In the warmer months, especially in the summer, it is, in fact, essential to prevent our back from sweating a lot, making sure that the trekking backpack remains stuck, causing us discomfort during the walk and possible skin irritation when we will remove it.
Therefore, when choosing, make sure that the hiking backpack we are evaluating has efficient hydration and breathability systems.
Especially that it is equipped with a breathable backrest that does not rest directly on the back, and that interposes a net between it and the backpack to allow the end to breathe, thus limiting sweating.
Ergonomics
Our backpack therefore, must be functional and useful, but it must also be comfortable and proportionate to our characteristics. The ergonomics of the trekking backpack will, therefore, play an essential role in our choice.
First of all, it is essential that our mountain backpack is proportionate to our height and the width of our abdomen, but also that the product we are going to buy is equipped with accessories and suspensions that allow us not to weigh on a single area but to distribute the weight throughout the body thus increasing comfort and limiting unpleasant injuries.
Here are the main “options” that our trekking backpack should have to be more comfortable during the activity:
- Back Padding: a key role is played by the back panel of the backpack which, in addition to being breathable, must include padding that softens the impact of the backpack with the back and makes travel comfortable. It is not visible, but it is this padding that holds, supports, and makes the back stiff, still allowing the natural twist in some movements.
- Hip Belt: when carrying heavy loads up to 80% of the weight of the backpack it falls precisely on this belt, for this reason, mainly if the activity also includes long-distance excursions, it is good that the backpack has a belt hip very padded, rigid, snug, which wraps anatomically around the hips but centered on the hip and not on the waist.
- Shoulder Straps or Shoulder Strap: a curve that anatomically adapts to the body, padding that is not very thick but which is still comfortable when we are going to wear them, these are the main characteristics that these accessories must-have in all backpacks.
- Chest Straps: an adjustable strap that is located just above the sternum and allows you to connect both shoulder straps to keep the backpack even more stable.
Internal organization
The last factor to consider when choosing the best hiking backpack is the organization of the interior space. If the backpacks with an external frame.
Thanks to the many external pockets, allow you to better organize equipment and accessories for our excursions on the flat, in the countryside or the mountains, even the modern backpacks with internal frames are designed taking this into account.
Almost all trekking backpacks now have a padded and shockproof upper pocket and provide access with zippers directly to the compartment central or at the bottom of the backpack so that you can immediately find what we are looking for without having to empty the whole backpack.
Remember that the mountaineering backpack must be above all functional, so it is essential to make sure it has rings or external attachment points where you can attach a climber’s ice ax or trekking poles.
Finally, if you plan to use it to travel to places where it could be challenging to find drinking water, make sure your backpack has a pocket with camelback to be filled with potable water that you can drink straight from a tube attached to the bag.
