When it comes to taking measurements, the first point to consider in an instrument is accuracy. Of course, this also applies to digital calipers, as not all of them guarantee the same level of skill.

The Three Lengths
In general, as anticipated at the opening, a caliper serves three types of measurement: the external dimensions, the internal dimensions, and the depth.
But now let’s try to broaden the discussion. When we talk about external dimensions, we refer to width, length, outer diameter, thickness, and distance between two surfaces.
When, however, we speak of internal dimensions, we refer to the distance that exists internally between two surfaces or to the inner diameter. Finally, the depth, we think of that of a hole on the wall, just to give an example.
For External Measurement
We will now go into further detail. As you can see, the caliber, whether digital or not, has four beaks, two on one side, and two on the other.
For now, we will focus on the bigger ones. These are for external measurements. Imagine, for example, wanting to know the exact thickness of your table. For Internal Measurement
Let’s say you want to know the glass’s diameter, but not the external one but the internal one. In this case, you have to use the smaller beaks, extending them until they touch the two opposite points of the diameter of the glass.
