Buying Guide to Select the Best Mortise Gauges

When it comes to taking measurements, the first point to consider in an instrument is accuracy. Of course, this also applies to digital calipers, as not all of them guarantee the same level of skill.

We suggest our readers to first evaluate for what purpose you want to use the caliber before unnecessarily spending a lot of money on a performing model.

For example, if you need to make some measurements at home, you can opt for a digital caliber at a cheaper price, which may even be a few tenths. In this way, you can find models with a good compromise between quality and price.

If you are looking for a professional tool instead, then we recommend looking for the digital caliper of the best brand, perhaps that can measure from 0015 “to .025” with high precision. Furthermore, the right product should have the mm \ inch conversion button, which allows you to view the two different units on display.

The operation of the Mortis gauge depends on the life of its battery and consumption. In most cases, the battery will not be rechargeable, so once exhausted, you will have to buy a spare. Be careful, though, because it is not said that this is an easy task, you will have to look for the compatible one.

So it is much better to find a model that has reduced consumption, especially in case you have to use it with a specific frequency. By doing so, you can also save further on the cost of purchasing a new battery. Some types of digital calipers automatically turn off if unused, a useful solution to avoid wasting unnecessary charges.

In the same way, if the power button is sensitive, you can run into the inverse problem, so it is good to take both factors into account.

The mortis guage is slid on a bar to carry out the measurements, which must be resistant and reliable so that it can withstand various uses. Usually, the bars of the best digital gauges are produced in hardened stainless steel, an excellent and long-lasting material capable of supporting the weight of the meter, which can be flowed smoothly.

In the same way, the same digital meter must have excellent resistance. Moreover, the keys for switching on and for activating the various functions must not be too soft. Otherwise, you risk making mistakes or inadvertently activating the tool.

The First Rule

Precisely because it is a precision instrument, the first rule is to keep it manic. It should be preserved and protected from shocks.

If the gauge falls off your hand, you should throw it away because it may no longer be reliable in making measurements. We are not just talking about the digital caliper; this also applies to the standard vernier caliper. Even a small fall could lead to an incorrect measurement.

The Three Lengths

In general, as anticipated at the opening, a caliper serves three types of measurement: the external dimensions, the internal dimensions, and the depth.

But now let’s try to broaden the discussion. When we talk about external dimensions, we refer to width, length, outer diameter, thickness, and distance between two surfaces.

When, however, we speak of internal dimensions, we refer to the distance that exists internally between two surfaces or to the inner diameter. Finally, the depth, we think of that of a hole on the wall, just to give an example.

For External Measurement

We will now go into further detail. As you can see, the caliber, whether digital or not, has four beaks, two on one side, and two on the other.

For now, we will focus on the bigger ones. These are for external measurements. Imagine, for example, wanting to know the exact thickness of your table. Push the cursor downwards and then bring it up again until you tighten the two sides of the table as if in a vice. You can read the exact measurement on display, which coincides with the cursor.

For Internal Measurement

Let’s say you want to know the glass’s diameter, but not the external one but the internal one. In this case, you have to use the smaller beaks, extending them until they touch the two opposite points of the diameter of the glass.

The measurements made can be checked on the large display, which also has a button for powering on, resetting, and converting mm \ inch. The accuracy of 0.02 is reliable, but some users have stated that the gauge tends to move slightly at the slightest oscillation of the bar, especially if it is not stopped at the top of the stopper.

It is delivered with a plastic case and a spare battery, in addition to the built-in one.
