Buyer Guide to Choose Photo Printers
Print Technology
Many of the printers we will deal with today are inkjet, so it works with the classic inkjet mechanism, but there are also photo printers based on other technologies.
For example, there are thermal sublimation printers in which the color, in the form of a polymer in the solid-state, is imprinted on the sheet using a thermal process (therefore employing heat), which makes it pass to the gaseous state during printing—all without the help of classic cartridges.
The quality of photos obtained by sublimation printing is generally higher than that of images obtained by inkjet. Still, it must be considered that sublimation printers require a particular type of paper (a paper capable of withstanding the high temperatures reached in the printing process), which is still quite expensive.
Furthermore, with sublimation printers, it is not possible to print standard documents, and it is not possible to create photos larger than ten × 15 cm.
Type of Cartridges and Colors
In the technical sheets of the photo printers, you will find terms such as four-color and five- color: these are terms that indicate the number and type of color cartridges in the printer.
Most printers are four-color, so they are based on the CMYK standard, which adds black to the three basic colors (yellow, magenta, cyan), but there are also printers with a greater number of colors that can return photos with more defined colors. Also, consider this before buying your next printer.
Print Speed
Before buying a photo printer, make sure its print speed is compatible with your needs. Print speed is expressed in seconds for photos and in pages per minute (ppm) for documents. As easily understood, the more advanced printers that manage to print more images per second are also more expensive.
Print Resolution
The print resolution indicates the level of definition of the images printed on paper. It is expressed in DPI (dots per inch) and, as can be easily guessed, the higher and better the final quality of the prints.
Supported Photo Formats
Most photo printers are capable of generating prints in the classic 10x15cm format, but there are also other photo formats (e.g., 9x13cm, 13x18cm, 15x21cm and 20x30cm) that are not supported by all printers. Before buying a photo printer, carefully check that it supports all the photo formats that interest you.
Portability
Some photo printers are equipped with rechargeable batteries that allow you to use them even on the move without connecting them to an electrical outlet. They are very compact and easy to handle but cost more than “traditional” printers.
If you decide to buy a portable printer to take it with you on the go and print your photos while you are away from home, also make sure about its autonomy: staying without a printer on the most beautiful would not be a pleasant experience!
Wireless Connectivity
The most modern photo printers can connect to PCs, smartphones, and tablets wirelessly using Wi-Fi networks or Wi-Fi Direct technology that allows two devices to communicate with each other without having a router that acts as a “bridge.” “
Then there are the printers that support Bluetooth and NFC for direct printing from smartphones and tablets (in fact, they are almost always portable printers).
Remaining in the wireless environment, I recommend that you also check the compatibility of the printers with the wireless printing services of the various hardware manufacturers (e.g., AirPrint for Apple devices) and with the cloud printing services that allow you to order the printing of a photo or document via the Internet (e.g., Google Cloud Print ).
Wireless printers often also have apps for smartphones and tablets that allow you to retouch your shots “on the fly” before printing them: an exciting plus if you intend to buy a photo printer to use it mainly on the move.
Doors and Displays
Another feature you should look at before buying a photo printer is the presence of displays, ports for USB devices, and slots for memory cards: these are three components that can be very useful when it comes to printing photos quickly without using the computer.
As easily understood, the display allows you to adjust the print settings and, in some cases, even to view or edit the photos to be printed. At the same time, the inputs for USB devices and memory cards are used to print photos directly from USB sticks, SD cards, and other portable media.
In some cases, there may also be a network (Ethernet) port to connect the printer to the network via cable.
Multifunction Photo Printers
Photo printers can be products in their own right; that is, printers capable of printing only photos, or, in the case of inkjets, they can be multifunctional.
Multifunction printers are those that include functions for printing and copying traditional documents (e.g., A4 sheets), scanning, and faxing. Be careful, though.
The photographic component of multifunction printers does not always live up to the photo printers in their own right. If you buy an inexpensive MFP, don’t expect high-quality shots.
Software Compatibility
Before buying a photo printer, carefully check its compatibility with the operating system installed on your computer. Typically printers can be installed on all newer versions of Windows and macOS, but it is always better to check instead of shopping in a closed box and then find yourself “arguing” with the drivers!
