Buyer Guide to Choose the Best Cordless Phones
If things are accurate as I described you, then know that you are in the right place at the right time! During this tutorial, I will provide you with valid indications regarding the parameters for choosing a device of this type.
Cordless Phone Features
Before even getting to the heart of the guide and correctly showing you which are the best cordless phones currently available on the market, let me give you some indications on their distinctive characteristics, which can help you in the choice phase.
Covering Radius
By definition, a cordless phone is not connected to its base with a cable, but via a radio frequency connection as it is simpler to understand, due to the nature of the relationship.
The cordless phones can work correctly up to a specified maximum distance from the base (which also takes into account obstacles, such as the thickness of the walls), after which the audio signal gradually begins to degrade until it disappears completely.
The coverage of a cordless phone generally varies from 20 meters indoors, up to over 500 meters outdoors. As I mentioned earlier, the coverage radius suffers obstacles and particular conformations of the surrounding environment.
In any case, long-range cordless phones cannot have a range greater than 2 km (beyond which the phone becomes illegal in Italy).
Number of Appliances
Typically, a cordless phone single consists of two primary devices: the real phone and its support base, which serves as both a charger that by “repeater”, able to transmit to distance the signal coming from the phone.
Some cordless telephones, however, are sold in kits that contain several elements, designed for larger environments (or on several floors), where the range of a single phone cannot cover a sufficient distance.
The cordless duo, which includes two telephones and two bases (one prepared for connection to the telephone plug and the other that connects to the first via wireless); the cordless trio, which include three telephones and three bases (only one is connected to the telephone line); and the cordless quartet, which instead comprise four phones and four stations.
Keep in mind that, in most cases, cordless duo, trio, and quartet allow you to participate simultaneously in the same cell, or to transfer the call from one device to another by pressing a single button.
Sound Quality
Another aspect to consider when purchasing a cordless phone is the quality of the sound. Generally, it is similar to that obtainable from a corded phone, provided that it remains within the range of wireless coverage allowed by the base to which it is connected.
Usually, telephones of this type have a unique function that allows you to adjust the volume of the internal speaker.
However, some medium-high end phones have technologies that can further improve the quality of the audio reproduced and, consequently, of the phone call: the HSP (or High Sound Performance) technology.
This aims to properly “clean” the sound reproduced, making it more transparent, and HDSP (High Definition Sound Performance) technology, which, on the other hand, allows you to obtain optimal sound quality and with a volume up to two times higher than usual.
Presence of Special Keys
Another feature to consider when purchasing is the presence of unique keys and configurable keys which, if pressed, allow you to perform a specific function “on the fly”. Below I list the most common.
- Search Key – is usually found on the base of the cordless phone and is used to make the phone ring to find it quickly.
- Sos Button – is a button often found on cordless devices dedicated to the elderly, the disabled, and other particular categories of users. It can be configured to dial the national emergency number or the number of a family member to whom to ask for help. In some cases, the SOS button allows you to make automatic calls to multiple quantities until you get an answer.
- Noise Reduction Button – is a button located on the phone, which is used to apply a filter to the microphone aimed at attenuating the surrounding environmental noises.
- Intercom Button – this button is located on the phone and is used to communicate with other cordless phones connected to the same base (or with the station itself, if equipped with speaker and microphone).
- Switchboard Key – characteristic of PABX cordless telephones, it allows you to route the call in progress to another extension.
Presence of Address Book and Answering Machine
Most cordless telephones have small internal memory, on which it is possible to create a directory containing names and telephone numbers, which can be called up “on the fly” after pressing a unique key (usually in the shape of a book ).
Furthermore, some cordless devices have a customizable integrated answering machine, capable of hosting the messages received when you do not answer the phone, or when you are not available.
The integrated answering machine for cordless phones is different from the answering service offered by telephone operators.
Cordless Vo Ip and Dect / Gap
To date, if you have an Internet connection in VDSL, mixed copper and optical fiber, the link to the telephone network is made by connecting the telephone, cordless and not, to the “phone” port (RJ-11 type) located onboard the modem.
There are, however, some categories of cordless, the so-called VoIP cordless, able to make and receive calls using the Internet and some pre-installed software, such as Skype or other types of SIP clients.
In this case, the connection between the phone and the modem takes place, on the other hand, via the Ethernet port (RJ-45 type), the same, which is also used for PCs and other network devices.
Another distinctive feature of cordless telephones is compatibility with DECT / GAP (or Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) technology: in this case, the base of the cordless phone.
Which must still receive power from the mains, can also be connected to the modem via Wi-Fi. Bases and telephones of this type of work, very often, even on non-VoIP telephone networks.
Furthermore, DECT / GAP phones also have more “advanced” functions, such as the possibility of listening to radio and streaming music, quickly reading emails and SMS, and surfing the Internet.
Finally, it will be useful to know that the bases compatible with this technology also allow you to register cordless phones from other manufacturers.
Pabx System
If you need a new cordless phone to be installed in an office with communications controlled by a control unit, you will almost certainly have to buy a PABX cordless phone.
This category of wireless telephones has a system capable of “participating” in the closed-circuit networks generated by private switchboards (particularly common in commercial offices and medium-large companies). Pabx cordless phones are usually configured through specific programs or apps and are compatible with DECT technology.
Other Features to Consider
Until now, I have listed the most crucial selection parameters to consider when buying a cordless phone, but you need to know that they are not the only ones. In essence, other features are worth mentioning, as they could guide your choice on one device, rather than another.
- Autonomy – as it is easy to imagine, a cordless phone is equipped with rechargeable batteries via the base. The independence varies significantly depending on the model chosen and the time spent in conversation. Still, it is useful to know that a cordless equipped with hybrid batteries (ni me) has greater autonomy than a device fitted with cadmium batteries (ni-cd).
- Bluetooth Compatibility – there are cordless devices compatible with Bluetooth, which allow you to connect external earphones, to make and receive calls without necessarily having to hold the handset in your hand.
- Gsm Compatibility – some cordless phones have a slot dedicated to the sim card, which can be used to make and receive calls and SMS (and, where possible, connect to the Internet) in the absence of a telephone line.
- Blocking and Blacklisting Functions – there are cordless phones that allow you to prevent the reception of calls from specific numbers. Besides, some devices of this type have “standard” blacklists, containing the names linked to known spam and commercial advertising numbers.
