Tanning oils are perfect for getting an intense tan and at the same time nourishing the skin. Some contain sunscreens and can, therefore, replace the classic cream, and others instead have only active ingredients that stimulate melanin production. Let’s see what are the best tanning oils to try this summer and how to choose the one that best suits our skin.

To have an intense, long-lasting, and above all, healthy tan, you need to use the right products. Among the most loved are tanning oils, which can be with or without sun protection.

Unlike classic sun creams, they have an invisible texture, deeply nourish the skin and contain active ingredients that stimulate the production of melanin, such as beta-carotene, hypericum, and walnut husk oil. Here we will be listing the top 10 best tanning oils.

Buying Guide to Select the Best Tanning Oils

On the market, there are different types of tanning oils, to be chosen according to your skin type. Tanning oils with sun protection, generally low or medium, are suitable for those who have already slightly tanned skin and want to intensify the tan while protecting it at the same time from the damage of UVA and UVB rays.

Tanning oils have both advantages and disadvantages and contraindications that should not be underestimated. Let’s see in detail what they are.

Why Use a Tanning Oil?

Why choose tanning oil instead of sunscreen? Very simple: because it speeds up and intensifies the tan. To replace the cream, sun oil must contain a protection factor to protect the skin from sunburn, erythema, sun spots, and premature ageing.

Solar oils without filters must always be combined with cream with SPF, or used exclusively on very dark and already tanned skin.

The Advantages of Tanning Oils

The first advantage of sun oils is that they do not leave white marks on the skin, as is the case with some creams. Once applied, they are not only invisible but illuminate the skin and enhance the tan.

Also, the oily formula moisturizes and nourishes the skin in-depth, counteracting the dryness caused by sunlight, especially if it is enriched with natural oils, such as coconut, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Finally, sun oils practically always contain active ingredients that stimulate melanin production and accelerate tanning, such as walnut husk oil, hypericum, and beta carotene.

The Risks and Contraindications of Tanning Oils

Tanning oils are not without risk. Especially those with low sun protection and those without filters are not recommended for those with very light skin, because they do not protect enough from the sun’s rays and could cause sunburn and rashes. For the same reason, they are not suitable for children and babies.

Pregnant women who use hormonal contraceptives should avoid using sun oils with walnut husk oil, St. John’s wort, and other active ingredients that stimulate melanin because they could cause sunspots that are difficult to remove.

How to Choose Tanning Oil?

To choose an excellent solar oil, you must first take into account the protection factor. The best ones are those that contain sunscreens because they intensify the tan, but at the same time protect against sunburn and erythema. The tanning oils without filters, as we have said many times, should only be used on very tanned or naturally dark skin.

Then evaluate the oil formulation, which must be moisturizing and nourishing, but also non-greasy and non-sticky. In this sense, dry oils are the best to use on the beach.

Finally, if you are looking for a tanning oil that works, check the active ingredients present in the oil: beta-carotene, walnut husk oil, sesame oil, and hypericum oil stimulate the production of melanin, but there must be also antioxidants, such as vitamins A and E, which counteract the harmful action of sunlight.

Where to Buy Tanning Oils?

You can buy tanning oils in the most supplied perfumeries, such as Sephora. Some brands, such as Garnier and Bilboa, are also available in supermarkets, while others, such as Dermasol oil, are found in the pharmacy. Know, however, that it is unlikely that you will find all the products that we have recommended.

Furthermore, we cannot guarantee that you will find them at the same price, because in physical stores, almost always the choice is limited and the prices are higher than those online.

For this reason, you should take a look at Amazon, where there is a wide assortment of solar oils of all kinds, including those included in this article, often at a discounted price.

Dermatol Solaire tanning oil promotes tanning and at the same time protects the skin with photostable filters with a broad spectrum of UVA and UVB (low protection).

Also, it has an antioxidant effect, moisturizes the skin, and tones it, thanks to sweet almond oil, beta-carotene, and vitamins A and E. Despite being an oil, it has a light and pleasant formula on the skin. It is hypoallergenic, does not contain parabens, and is not comedogenic, so it is perfect for sensitive skin. Like all sunscreens with low protection, it should be used on already tanned skin.

Conclusion

The Chogan tanning oil gives a rapid and super intense tan, thanks to the extract of St. John’s wort and the walnut husk. The hypericum, in addition to giving the skin a golden color, protects it from the harmful action of the sun’s rays, making it soft and elastic.

Walnut husk, on the other hand, reacts with the keratin of the skin to form a complex of dark brown pigments and is a natural source of flavonoids and beta-carotene.

For maximum effectiveness, it must be applied several times a day, always combined with a sunscreen, because it does not contain protective filters. It is not recommended for very light skin, especially used without protection.
