Buying Guide to Select the Best Photo Scanner with Feeder

Working in the office often involves the need to scan documents to make changes or to send them quickly via email. For this, depending on the type of paper to be scanned, there are various types of scanners. First of all, it is essential to understand some aspects of how they work.

How Does a Scanner Work?

The origin of the scanner dates back to 1984 when Microtek developed the first of these instruments. The operation consists in receiving the image through mirrors of light reflected in a sensor.

The sensor transforms light energy into electrical signals, which in turn are rendered in digital format for the computer and then visible on the screen.

It is a simple process. In flatbed scanners, simply place the document under the cover and press a button, then repeat. In automatic machines, it is sufficient to leave the sheets in the tray and wait for them to be scanned automatically. Portable scanners have a slot for storing documents.

What Is the Color Depth?

The color depth is a parameter expressed in bits and indicates the hue range that a pixel can adopt. The standard of the best scanners on the market is usually 24 bit.

In this way, a variety of approximately 16 million possible colors is obtained. If you drop below 24 bits, the image quality is affected accordingly.

Greater color depth will make the scanned document more faithful to the original. It should be noted, however, that the scanning process will be slower.

Besides, a greater depth of colors also corresponds to more significant storage space. However, to edit the document, especially if it is a photo, it is always better than the depth is high.

Flat, Duplex or Automatic

Comparing the prices, the cost changes are related to the type of device, since there are three different versions. The most popular model is the flatbed scanner, designed to scan documents on a single page. It is characterized by a cheaper cost but is not very fast and, therefore, suitable for occasional use.

The scanner with automatic feeder, on the other hand, is more extensive and is designed to scan a large number of documents, thanks to the feeder that allows you to load all the pages and then perform the operation. Fast and autonomous, it is ideal for offices or if you need high volumes.

Finally, duplex models have sensors on both sides and are therefore able to scan the front and back of a document in one go.

What Kind of Documents Can Be Scanned?

All the photo scanners we’ve talked about so far have in common the ability to digitize paper documents. Or, at the very least, to scan sheets up to A4 size, which is the most common.

Automatic scanners are the most limited because they allow you to scan only sheets of paper.
Flatbed scanners are, however, more versatile. They allow for digitizing not only paper documents but also labels, seals, recipes, or photographs.

How Do You Connect a Scanner?

The most common method of connecting a scanner is through a USB cable. In this way, the digitized information is sent directly to the computer.

However, there are more and more models on the market that include the wireless connection between their features. This is a great convenience since it allows you to position the scanner at a greater distance from the computer.

Some users place great importance on the wireless feature to use the scanner with their tablet or mobile phone.

Furthermore, in the offices, there are usually internal networks that allow you to transfer the scanned images to different devices. On the other hand, some scanner models provide access for memory cards to store scanned documents.

What Is the Charge Coupled Device of Scanners?

The charge-coupled devices (CCD) is a sensor present in some types of scanners. It is also used in photography or astronomy and allows you to scan images with less noise and in better quality.

The origin of the CCD dates back to 1969, with the invention of the first of these sensors. Due to its sensitivity, it allows you to recognize the various shades of light.

It is essential for digital results that are as faithful as possible to the original copy, especially when it comes to images where color has a lot of relevance.

Purchase criteria

In the digital age, managing a large number of printed documents can be a drawback. Sometimes it is necessary to make changes, store them in the memory of the PC or send them via email, and to do this, and it is essential to have a scanner available. To help you choose the best one, here are some factors you need to evaluate.

  • Resolution
  • Sensor
  • Speed
  • Size of scanned documents
  • Type of user

Resolution

Resolution is a fundamental criterion for evaluating the quality of a scanner. It is a feature that is expressed in points per inch (PPP), and as the resolution increases, the quality of the scanned image will also be higher and, therefore, more faithful to the physical document.

Consider, however, that a higher resolution also corresponds to larger storage space. Be careful not to confuse this parameter with the size of the document.

Even if they are related to each other, it is not the same thing. Resolution refers to the quality of the scanned image so that a higher quality image can be enlarged without grainy it. Besides, an excellent decision allows you to edit the document more easily.

Sensor

The scanning technique is very similar to that of photography. Both technologies use light to capture an object in an image.

This is possible thanks to the sensor, which receives and interprets the light signal by converting it into electrical impulses. Afterward, these signals turn into a digital image identical to the original.

There are two types of sensors: the CCD we mentioned earlier and the CIS (Contact image sensor). CIS is the one that offers the most balance between manufacturing cost and image quality. However, CCD is the one most used in professional scanners, especially those used in photography.

Speed

For office work, the speed of a scanner is a factor to consider when choosing one or another. The rate of the scan also depends on the material being scanned. Generally, more time is used for a photograph than for a text document. Besides, the resolution will also affect the scan speed.

If you use a manual scanner, it will take longer to scan a document. However, if you choose to buy an automatic scanner, you will have the possibility to study blocks of materials by merely placing them in a sort of tray.

Afterward, the scanner will take care of everything, avoiding the trouble of scanning sheet by sheet.

Advantages

  1. Greater Resolution
  2. Better color depth
  3. They allow you to digitize negatives, slides, and films

Disadvantages

  1. The Documents Must Be Scanned One by One
  2. It is a slower process

Size of Scanned Documents

The size of the scanner will be decisive for the scope of the scanned documents. The largest format is A4, i.e., that of a regular sheet. Most manual and automatic scanners follow this format. But of course, your choice will depend on how you use it.

Digitizing documents smaller than an A4 sheet is usually not a problem. Instead, some difficulties may arise with more significant materials. Still, there is nothing that cannot be solved by scanning the document in parts, even if the quality of the result is affected.

Some scanner models allow you to scan documents larger than A4 size. However, they are more cumbersome and used in specific jobs. For example, in an architectural firm, it is a fundamental device. Yet, most offices have scanners for A4 documents.

Type of User

There are scanners suitable for each user. If you plan to scan many documents, an automatic scanner is the best choice. This option will save you time which you can invest in other aspects of your work. Remember that this type of scanner is especially useful with text documents.

If, on the contrary, you will not make frequent use of it, then you should opt for a manual scanner, especially if you need to digitize photographs whose quality you want to maintain habitually. On the other hand, if you need a scanner to carry anywhere, there are also some excellent portable scanners.
