Their use is optimal, especially in periods when the hair is particularly stressed, due to sun, chlorine, and salt, or in the change of season.

What Is Keratin and What Is It For?
Keratin is a protein naturally produced by the hair. It is necessary for the health of the scalp, which derives strength, volume, and shines from it.
For this reason, it is advisable to preserve it and avoid spoiling the hair with too aggressive products and continuous exposure to heat sources. It is, in fact, a non-renewable protein. Once exhausted, the organism stops producing it, and the consequences concern the hair very closely.
Without keratin, the scalp appears dry, brittle, frizzy, lacking in volume, and perpetually opaque. Among the causes that lead to the lack of keratin production we find:
- Continuous coloring, dyeing, bleaching;
- Prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays;
- Unrestrained use of hairdryer, plate, and irons;
- Use of aggressive treatments;
Age.
Lesser keratin production can often be felt in times of greater stress for the hair. Especially during the summer season in contact with the sun’s rays and the saltiness, the hair can appear dry and brittle, the first alarm bell on the lack of keratin.
What Are Keratin Hair Masks For?
Keratin can be found in different forms: shampoos, conditioners, sprays, hair masks, leave-in allow to cure the hair to bring it back to its original state.
Keratin hair masks act in-depth, restructuring the scalp with a purely reinforcing and revitalizing action. They regulate frizzy hair, making it smoother and softer to the touch. They are specific for dry, damaged, treated, brittle, frizzy, and stressed hair.
They can be of two types:
- Tonic – They act on the hair revitalizing it and reconstituting it from the root, giving it softness and volume. They do not contain formaldehyde and repair hair damage, prevent split ends and protect from heat sources ;
- Straighteners – Straighten the hair, combining keratin with formaldehyde. They allow us to obtain an impeccable smooth and a total detangling effect.
Do Keratin Hair Masks Ruin Hair?
It depends on the type of keratin hair mask. If you choose a restorative keratin mask, there are no contraindications for the use nor side effects. The treatment is entirely safe, free of silicones, and other harmful elements for the scalp. You will have healthy, shiny, and full-bodied hair.

How and When to Use Keratin Hair Masks
The keratin hair mask is to be used only for hair:
- Secchi;
- Damaged;
- Treated;
- Brittle;
- Crespi;
- Stressed;
- Fine, Thin, and Sensitive.
An excess of keratin on an already well-hydrated hair could compromise its balance and have the opposite effects. Its use is recommended before and after the summer season: it protects the hair first, reconstitutes it after.
Use it as a regular hair mask. How many times depends on the hair:
- On average damaged, dry, brittle hair, the weekly or biweekly application is sufficient;
- On very damaged, damaged, dry, stressed, and frizzy hair, you can apply it twice a week.
- The treatment should be carried out for a few months until results are obtained. Keratin hair masks are applied directly to the hair with the help of a specific brush and left on for times ranging from 5 to 30 minutes.
Strictly follow the instructions on the package. Always choose light masks, free of silicones: the hair will be healthier for longer.
Are There Any Contraindications?
However, we cannot ignore the negative aspects and the potential risks that keratin treatments can reserve. We are not talking about sprays, which are milder products with fewer contraindications, and not even about keratin reconstruction treatments that serve to nourish the hair.
But about smoothing treatments that can sometimes be risky. In fact, in addition to keratin, they also contain formaldehyde, a carcinogenic and dangerous substance.
The formaldehyde in these treatments acts as a “fixative” ingredient that serves to keep hair smooth for a long time, but at the same time, it is harmful to health. As for the restructuring treatments, contact your trusted hairdresser who will use the right ingredients based on your hair type.
